More Fear Street movies are coming to Netflix (according to R.L. Stine)
By Renee Hansen
Last summer, Netflix gave horror fans an amazing new slasher trilogy based on the young adult horror Fear Street series of books by R.L. Stine. The trilogy released one film each week in July 2021, telling the tale in reverse, beginning in 1994 to 1978 and ending in 1666, following a curse that shadowed the town of Shadyside for hundreds of years.
The films were directed by Leigh Janiak, known for the horror film Honeymoon and the series The Staircase, and she expressed interest in being involved in the expansion of the series with future films, as did several of the cast members.
The trilogy of films has excellent reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with part 1 at 84%, part 2 at 88% and part 3 at 90%. This series harked back to the ’80s slasher films with great bits of nostalgia thrown in for fans of that genre. The gore and original kills gave the films an R-rating, which surprised many because they were based on a series of YA books.
And I haven’t even mentioned the killer soundtracks for these films. We all know a soundtrack can make or break a movie and the Fear Street trilogy used the music to its full advantage.
The cast for these movies consisted of Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Julia Rehwald, Fred Hechinger, Ashley Zukerman, Ted Sutherland, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Jordana Spiro, Jordyn DiNatale, Elizabeth Scopel, Gillian Jacobs, Emily Rudd, Ryan Simpkins, Lloyd Pitts, McCabe Slye and Chiara Aurelia. The movies also star two Stranger Things actresses, Maya Hawke and Sadie Sink. Several actors starred in all three films.
New Fear Street movies in development
In a recent interview with Yahoo!, author R.L. Stine raved about the Fear Street trilogy of films’ R-rating, excited to have his own slasher movies. He also stated that there are rumors about more Fear Street movies coming from Netflix since the first three did so well.
According to Bloody Disgusting, the rumors of additional Fear Street movies being in development are true, which is great news for fans. Netflix has done an outstanding job with its horror offerings and more movies in the Fear Street series would be a welcome addition.
