With Stranger Things season 4 complete and the Duffer Brothers starting work on season 5 soon, it’s almost the end of the road for this beloved series. Good thing Matt and Ross Duffer have a plan for a Stranger Things spinoff series.

The duo has stayed very mum about plot details, even suggesting that only Finn Wolfhard knows what their idea is about so far. It’s safe to say that fans haven’t really managed to predict it yet, but now that Stranger Things is winding down, the Duffers have started providing some more clues.

Matt and Ross recently appeared on an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast and discussed their ideas.

The Stranger Things spinoff will not focus on Eleven or any main characters

There were rumors circulating for a while that a spinoff series would center on Eleven or even a buddy-comedy adventure series following Dustin and Steve solving mysteries. The Duffers have ruled out both of these options.

They clarified that it wouldn’t be interesting for them to do a spinoff about the main characters because they’ve already done that in the show.

“That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different,” says Matt.

Ross chimed in to say, “There’s connective tissue, but almost the most important connective tissue, I would say, is the storytelling sensibility of it. I think that that’s, more than anything, is what connects. There is story that connects to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.”

The Stranger Things spinoff will be ‘1000% different’ from the original series

Don’t expect the new show to be set in Hawkins, Indiana or even fit the same tone as the original show. The Duffers said it will be “1000% different.” What that means exactly, is still anyone’s guess.

The other thing that will make this different is that the Duffers themselves will probably not be writing and directing, at least not all of it. They’ve said they want to find the right creative partner to spearhead the new project, since committing to another lengthy project like this one would be too much for them so soon after Stranger Things wraps.

As for theories, it’s hard to discern their idea with so few clues, maybe we should be asking Wolfhard instead since only he knows, not even the Netflix executives know yet!
