Despite us inching closer to the inevitable end of Stranger Things after the announcement that  season 5 will be its last, it appears it’s not the complete and utter end of the Upside Down! Recently, the Duffer brothers teased a potential spin-off of the hit-Netflix sci-fi series, but are still playing coy with what it will be about and who it will follow.

In an emailed interview with Variety, they revealed that only Finn Wolfhard knows what the new series will be about. Matt and Ross Duffer told the publication that they “do have an idea for a spinoff” that’s making them “super-excited,” but are keeping the details to themselves. They told the publication in May ahead of season 4’s release:

"“We haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it, [but] we think everyone — including Netflix — will be surprised when they hear the concept because it’s very, very different. But somehow Finn Wolfhard — who is one crazy smart kid — correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”"

So this got us thinking, what could the spin-off series be about? Who could it follow? Check out our three out-there theories about the potential Stranger Things spin-off below!

Stranger Things spin-off ideas

Back in February, when the Duffer brothers announced that Stranger Things season 4 will be split into two volumes, the duo revealed that there are “still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of ‘Stranger Things’,” teasing “new mysteries, new adventures, and new unexpected heroes.” Here are our own theories!

An Upside Down spin-off

One of our theories is that the new spin-off series will be based in the Upside Down. This could potentially follow 001’s journey to becoming Vecna and his descent into evil or following how the Mind Flayer came to be. Who knows, there might be a whole monster Upside Down society that we just don’t know about, and what’s more unexpected than a Demogorgon hero?

A prequel to Stranger Things

Another theory that we’ve been thinking about is the potential for the spin-off series to be set in an even earlier time, potentially even following the parents of our favorite curious kids, as kids themselves getting into mysterious mischief and adventures. In season 1 it alluded that nothing major had happened in the town of Hawkins for nearly 30 years, so there’s potential to explore that story. Maybe there was even a  murder cover-up or something spookier involving the grown-ups of Stranger Things. You never know, we could finally find out what made Mike’s dad, Mr. Wheeler, such a cranky old man

A sequel set in the future

Our third theory, and one we’re most excited about, is that the spin-off will be based in the near future following the kids of our favorite surviving Upside Down gang members. Things in Hawkins could be flaring back up, maybe a gate or two have opened back up again, so with new disappearances and new monster appearances it could be up to a new gang to defeat the Upside Down again, though we’re sure the Duffer Brothers will throw in a few new twists and scares to the series.

Whatever the spin-off will be about, one thing we’re already sure about is that we’ll be glued down to our seats binging it upon its release.
