What do you get when you mix musical comedy with hard-hitting, raw emotions? The answer is no other than Bo Burnham’s Netflix special, Inside.

Released on May 30, 2021, the former stand-up comedian broke his five-year hiatus by releasing Inside. He stopped performing because he was starting to have panic attacks on stage, and anxiety overcame him and inevitably his career.

But then came the opportunity to create the comedy special all by himself, in his own home!

It is an hour and 27 minutes long special that is jam-packed with 21 songs, serving as a timeline of how it feels to regress into a worsening mental state, criticizing current generations consumption of media and so much more!

Bo Burnham releases new Inside footage

The entire piece is a curation of Bo’s psychological and emotional breakdown that manifests as a result of being trapped at home due to COVID-19.

Fast forward one year and Bo Burnham tweets that he is releasing the unused footage from Inside to his YouTube channel on May 31, 2022, just in time for the one year anniversary of Inside’s release! It took him two months to finish editing these outtakes alone, despite filming them from March 2020 to May 2021.

The depth behind the Inside outtakes

What fans thought would be some silly, light-hearted bloopers turned out to be 63 minutes of raw humanity at it’s finest.

The mistakes that come with the attempts of creating something beautiful, the self-hatred and self-doubt that comes with failure before success, and even creative rants about politics and relationships with others and oneself.

He somehow managed to turn the ‘”How did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side…” joke into an extended unvarnished musical piece about how a woman wants to be more than a mother and wife and pursue the dreams she never thought imaginable.

She nurtures those around her, “but is that all that she is?”

She cannot handle the confines of the life she has found herself deeply stuck in, yet the possibility of new dreams and a new life other than that she has become so accustomed to is deeply motivating. The chicken decides to go for it, but finds herself frozen and stuck in crossroads, and never makes it.

This is most definitely a candid and almost brutally realistic take on the sadness behind womanhood in the eyes of the patriarchy, as written by the feminist and activist, Bo Burnham.

Who would’ve ever thought you could get so emotional over a chicken?

The outtakes contain unreleased music and scenes we didn’t get to see in Inside, and fans have commented how it feels almost like a comforting part 2.

"“a year ago today, i released a special called inside. i’ve spent the last two months editing together material that i shot for the special but didn’t end up using. it will be on my youtube channel in one hour. i hope you enjoy it.” – Bo Burnham tweeted on May 31, 2022, 10:05 am."

You can watch the outtakes in the video here.

In the caption of the YouTube video, Bo Burnham says he will be releasing the deluxe album soon!

So, if you were wondering if you’d be able to listen to that insanely funny “Five Years” song or maybe even the short satirical musical outburst about Joe Biden, the answer is yes! It’ll be on Spotify sometime soon.
