A satire is in the works about Squid Game, and its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk who is behind it. The talented filmmaker is in the early stages of developing the comedic satirical project about the Netflix show’s success.
As of now, the title is The Best Show on the Planet. It’s still in the very early stages, but Dong-hyuk shared with Deadline that it would focus on Squid Game‘s overnight success and his personal experience suddenly becoming center of attention to media and fans.
The series definitely became a Netflix hit. It is the streamer’s most-watched non-English series, became the top-viewed program in 94 countries, and amassed 1.65 billion viewing hours during its first four weeks from launch.
How Squid Game was greenlit
Though the series was a success, it didn’t initially get the green light when Dong-hyuk shopped it around before Netflix came along, according to Deadline. He spent a year working on a feature film version, but no one picked it up. Seven years later, the streaming giant came along and now we have the 10-episode Netflix original series that we’ve all become obsessed with!
The Squid Game creator was able to come up with the idea of the show as he based it on his own previous economic struggles, as well as the class disparity in South Korea.
Is there going to be a Squid Game season 2?
A second season of the survival drama hasn’t been officially confirmed by Netflix yet, but the creator of the series is very hopeful that a season 2 will happen. He is currently working on the script he will take to the streaming service. We won’t be seeing the show this year. Deadline reports Halloween 2024 is the target release date.
The filmmaker also confirmed actor Lee Jung-jae, who plays lead character Seong Gi-hun, will definitely reprise his role in season 2. Dong-hyuk is also thinking of giving actor Lee Byun-hun a bigger role as the Front Man.
