Chris Hemsworth stars as a brilliant and eccentric tech visionary standing behind the creation of a new kind of penitentiary that commutes sentences for a mind-altering drug trial in the upcoming psychological thriller film Spiderhead. Genre-bending and darkly funny, the movie will be arriving on Netflix very soon.

Besides Hemsworth, fans will also recognize familiar faces like Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett, who play two of the incarcerated. Spiderhead is releasing this June and Netflix finally released the official trailer, key art and additional photos for the movie. Below we’ll showcase everything you need to know about the film.

The upcoming film starring Chris Hemsworth is directed by Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Chris Hemsworth is also producing alongside Wernick, Reese, Eric Newman, Agnes Chu, Geneva Wasser, Tommy Harper and Jeremy Steckler.

Spiderhead release date

Spiderhead will be released on Friday, June 17, 2022. It seems sort of fitting that both Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky, have new movies coming out on Netflix in June. Hemsworth also serves as an executive producer on Pataky’s movie Interceptor, which is coming out on June 3.

Content launches on Netflix at 12:00 a.m. PT/3:00 a.m. ET the day of release.

Spiderhead synopsis

The movie will be based on The New Yorker short story by George Saunders called Escape from Spiderhead. Escape from Spiderhead is one of the longer stories in the volume. The entire book is a really great read and I highly recommend it.

Here is the official Netflix synopsis:

"In a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by brilliant visionary Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), inmates wear a surgically attached device that administers dosages of mind-altering drugs in exchange for commuted sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits. In Spiderhead, incarcerated volunteers are free to be themselves. Until they’re not. At times, they’re a better version. Need to lighten up? There’s a drug for that. At a loss for words? There’s a drug for that, too. But when two subjects, Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form a connection, their path to redemption take a twistier turn, as Abnesti’s experiments start to push the limits of free will altogether."

The first trailer for the film has been released and Hemsworth looks like he’s having a blast in this role. He seems to do well in darkly comedic roles, as evidenced with his film Bad Times at the El Royale.

At the beginning, Chris Hemsworth’s character, Steve, the mastermind behind Spiderhead, asks them how attracted they are to one another. Each one gives a rather lukewarm response, but once the drug is administered…they can’t keep their hands off each other.
