For those unfamiliar, Cline was a respected doctor in Indianapolis between the 1970s and 1990s. He helped many women get pregnant via insemination. But unbeknownst to his clients, Cline would regularly use his own sperm instead of the anonymous donor sperm (or, in some cases, their husband’s sperm), leading to him having dozens of children. The documentary follows Jacoba Ballard and her pursuit of justice against Cline for his crimes.

Cline lied to investigators and was charged with two counts of obstruction of justice. No other charges were ever filed against him because there was no specific law in Indiana (or on a federal level) prohibiting a doctor from using his sperm in place of a donor.

Ultimately, the judge appeared sympathetic to Cline, based on the documentary, and all he got was a fine and a suspended prison sentence. Later, he was stripped of his medical license, so that’s something, I guess.
