Space Force canceled: Space Force season 3 not happening at Netflix (here’s why)
By Mads Lennon
Netflix continues its recent trend of cancellations by officially announcing that the Steve Carrell-led comedy series Space Force will not continue. The workplace comedy originally premiered in May 2020 with a second season releasing in February 2022. On Friday, April 29, Deadline revealed that Netflix would not be moving forward with Space Force season 3.
Created by Greg Daniels and Steve Carrell, the comedy show struggled to take flight despite its premise. Besides Carrell, the series had a great cast of stars such as John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome, Jimmy O. Yang and Don Lake. But neither season was ever beloved by critics, or even fans.
Why was Space Force canceled at Netflix?
Unlike some of the other shows Netflix has canceled, Space Force probably won’t be spawning any passionate fan campaigns to save the series. Season 2 struggled to find the kind of viewership numbers Netflix expects from its shows.
According to Deadline, the second season only made a brief appearance on the streaming originals Nielsen charts at No. 8 before rising to No. 7. After that, it had a short presence in Netflix’s Daily Top 10, peaking at No. 5. The first season remained at No. 1 for a longer time.
Considering the cost of a show like this one, it’s not too surprising that Netflix opted to cancel it after it received less than stellar ratings for its latest season. It joins other recent cancellations, Pretty Smart and Raising Dion.
Comedy seems to be one of the areas Netflix is struggling to conquer with many of the shows sitcoms and comedy series performing poorly, particularly multi-cam comedies. There are a few more on the horizon, such as Mike Myers’ The Pentaverate, Blockbuster and That 90s Show, so we’ll see if Netflix can find its footing with any of those.
