As much as we love to see the very talented Emily Osment booked and busy, we have to admit that we’re a little conflicted that her latest role seems to come at the expense of her Netflix original series Pretty Smart. Could the writing be on the wall?

TV Line reports that Emily Osment will join the CBS sitcom Young Sheldon season 6 as a series regular. Osment first appeared in the fifth season of The Big Bang Theory prequel spin-off as Mandy McCallister, and it looks like she’s sticking around for the near future.

Mandy, a 29-year-old weather girl, ends up pregnant with Sheldon’s 17-year-old older brother’s baby after he lied about his age. That sounds like a whole mess that we won’t get into, but what we will get into is what this could possibly mean for Osment’s underrated series Pretty Smart.

The sitcom premiered on Netflix in October 2021 and wasn’t exactly a critical darling or fan favorite to say the least. Because the show failed to rank in the top 10 and the streamer has been mum on its fate ever since, we’ve been wondering if it’s canceled. Well, we might not have to wonder anymore.

UPDATE: Shortly after publishing this post, TV Live reported that Netflix had officially canceled Pretty Smart after one season.

Is Pretty Smart canceled?

Netflix has yet to formally announce a cancellation for Pretty Smart, but no news doesn’t appear to be good news in this situation. It didn’t look good for the sitcom, and we’d venture to say that it looks even worse. For all intents and purposes, we’d call Pretty Smart canceled.

Osment becoming a series regular on another show doesn’t make the case for another show she that she was the lead of coming back for a second season. It seems that she has moved on with different work, and it’s work that will have her availability occupied for a full season of television.

Some might call this pessimistic and still have hope for Pretty Smart season 2, which is always possible. Netflix could opt to renew the series and quickly film the season this summer while Osment has a break from Young Sheldon. But is that likely? The numbers don’t say so.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see if Netflix announces an official cancellation for Pretty Smart. Until then, catch Osment in Young Sheldon on CBS.
