Get ready for your new obsession, Netflix viewers! Heartstopper just debuted on the platform in the early hours of this morning and it’s bound to become super popular. The new LGBTQ+ series is based on graphic novels of the same name by Alice Oseman, following a teenager named Charlie Springs (Joe Locke) and his romantic relationships. Though he’s seeing a mean boy named Ben Hope (Sebastian Croft) at the start of the show, he soon starts to fall for Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), who changes his life for the better.

Heartstopper shows Charlie’s relationship with Nick bloom as Nick deals with his own sexuality. Charlie is already out as gay at the start of the show, while this is all brand new for Nick.

Spoilers ahead for Heartstopper.

Nick had never realized he might like boys before meeting Charlie, and that’s understandably very difficult to work through. Nick is a popular kid at school and on the rugby team, who’s seen as a very masculine person with girls chasing him. Some of his friends are preppy jerks, who pressure him to pursue girls at school despite Nick not showing any interest. As you can probably tell, all of this makes his relationship with Charlie pretty complicated.

But despite all the outside noise, Nick just wants to be with Charlie. The two boys start hanging out outside of school and soon become the best of friends. Nick even invites Charlie to his friend Harry Greene’s (Cormac Hyde-Corrin) party, which turns out to be a bit of a mess. Harry bullies Charlie and tries to get Nick to hang out with girls, which is not what he wants. When Nick and Charlie decide to find a quiet room away from everyone else, they get close and share their first kiss. It seems like Nick is confused, but wanting to kiss Charlie. When he hears his friends calling his name, however, he panics and leaves Charlie alone.

Nick and Charlie continue to go through similar hiccups as Nick tries to figure out who he is and what he wants. He researches homosexuality and bisexuality online, and watches YouTube videos of a vlogger who talks about what it’s like to be bisexual. Throughout the season, Nick starts to think he might be bisexual. During a movie night with his mom, he realizes he still likes girls when he watches a scene of Keira Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean, a childhood crush of his.

Does Nick come out as gay or bisexual in Heartstopper?

By the end of Heartstopper, Nick is certain that he is bisexual and he comes out to both Charlie and his mom (Olivia Colman). His mom is incredibly supportive and it’s a really great scene between the two. Charlie and Nick decide they’re officially boyfriends and that they’re going to tell their loved ones they’re together. Nick notes he doesn’t want to make a big announcement about his sexuality, but he doesn’t want to hide who he’s dating or what he identifies as.

Heartstopper is such a wonderful show and I’m so excited for people to watch it! As of right now, it hasn’t been renewed for a second season, but fingers crossed we get that announcement soon. All eight episodes of season 1 are now streaming on Netflix.
