Inspiring movies on Netflix

These are the five most inspiring movies on Netflix to watch right now, beginning below with The Shack.

The Shack (2017)

The first movie on the list is based on a book that has sold over 10 million copies written by William P. Young. The Christian-themed novel The Shack has been one of the most essential books of the last decade. With the book’s success, it was only a matter of time before a screen version would one day be created. Sam Washington and Octavia Spencer star in the faith-based drama about a grief-stricken man’s encounter with God. The Shack received mixed to negative reviews but was a box office success. The movie is relatable to anyone who has ever felt or didn’t feel a connection to a higher power.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

David O. Russell did a fantastic job creating a romance movie based in Philly. The two characters in the film fall for each other as they heal from their own traumas. The perfect blend of laughs, tears, and painful authenticity brings this love story together. Silver Linings Playbook is a movie that will make us look at our own lives and think of the times when we felt depressed and gave up. The stars in the film included Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Jacki Weaver. Lawrence won Best Actress for the film. There have only been a few films in recent memory to truly capture the devastating heartbreak and needed laughter Silver Linings Playbook did.

The Green Mile (1999)

Frank Darabont’s The Green Mile stars Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan in a story about supernatural events while an inmate is on death row. Despite being a three-hour movie, The Green Mile doesn’t feel like a long movie. The characters in the film are good enough to grab the viewer’s attention. The movie allows the viewers to see prison’s effects on a person through months and years and revolves around the lives of several guards on Death Row duty at a penitentiary.

The story is based on John Coffey, convicted of rape and murder, arrives. Soon, while watching over Coffey, Paul Edgecomb realizes that there is more to him than what can be seen as he witnesses several supernatural events after the arrival of the new convict at the facility. The drama received four Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Duncan), Best Sound, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

Aaron Sorkin wastes no time getting the viewers into the chaos that was taken place in 1968, introducing viewers to the key players in what would become known as the trial of the Chicago 7, as they plan their trip to the Windy City to protest the Vietnam War during the Democratic National Convention. The men are arrested and charged with crossing state lines to incite a riot. John N. Mitchell, the Attorney General, appoints Tom Foran and Richard Schultz as the prosecutors, while all the defendants except Seale are represented by William Kunstler and Leonard Weiglass.

The judge in the film shows a significant amount of prejudice against the prosecution. This is a rollercoaster of a movie that shows how important it is to fight for what you believe in. The film gave viewers strong performances from Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Michael Keaton, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and would rack up five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Dunkirk (2017)

In 1940, during the battle of France, allied soldiers retreated to Dunkirk. Timmy Jensen, a young British private, is the only survivor of a German ambush. At the beach, Jensen finds thousands of troops awaiting evacuation and meets Gibson, who is burying a body. When Luftwaffe dive-bomber attacks, they are forced to aboard a hospital ship but are ordered off. The boat sinks by bombers.

What makes Dunkirk genuinely unique is it allows viewers to see the war from the eyes of multiple lead characters. The film does an excellent job of focusing on the war and the emotions that go through a soldier’s mind living in that moment. Dunkirk shows the audience how hundreds, thousands, millions of people worked together as a community for victory during our darkest hour, and that is quite powerful.
