Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

Also by Joe Berlinger, The Ted Bundy Tapes is the predecessor to The John Wayne Gacy Tapes. So while the two docuseries are about different serial killers, odds are if you’re interested in Gacy, you’ll be inclined to learn more about Bundy too. In The Ted Bundy Tapes, more than 100 hours of interviews with Bundy are used to create a haunting docuseries that includes interviews and archival footage of the killer.

Devil in Disguise

Even though this show is not available to stream on Netflix, Devil in Disguise is obviously the next best thing to The John Wayne Gacy Tapes. This six-part docuseries delves deep into the case, examining it from all possible angles and including several important interviews with law enforcement officers and journalists who were involved with the case while it was still being investigated. It’s a great follow-up to the Netflix doc and currently streaming on Peacock.

The Clown and the Candyman

This short docuseries is about a rather crazy possible connection between two different killers, John Wayne Gacy and Dean Corll. Even though Gacy was in Chicago and Corll in Houston, they might have been linked by a network of pedophiles spanning the country that included prominent members of our society with branches in some of our most trusted institutions. The Clown and the Candyman is available on Discovery+ and you can purchase it through digital retailers like iTunes and Google Play.

Inside the Criminal Mind

This Netflix docuseries explores the criminal mind through psychological machinations. Each episode delves into the background of infamous criminals with commentary from some of the world’s leading experts, crafting cognitive profiles to help the audience understand and recognize the psychology that creates these types of criminals.

Catching Killers

Like the title suggests, Catching Killers is another Netflix docuseries where every episode takes viewers behind the investigation into some of the most prolific serial killer cases, including the Green River Killer, Aileen Wuornos, the Happy Face Killer and more.

Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer

Night Stalker is another Netflix docuseries that should appeal to anyone who likes learning more about serial killers. This time it’s alla bout the Night Stalker, a.k.a. Ricardo “Richard” Ramirez, an American serial killer, serial rapist, kidnapper, child molestor and burglar who was active in California between June 1984 and August 1985.

Mindhunter

It might be cheating to include Mindhunter since the series from David Fincher is not a documentary, but Gacy is teased in the second season. It seemed like the show was poised to introduce him during season 3, but sadly Mindhunter has not returned for a third season.
