How many Heartstopper books are there? (And how to read them in order)

Heartstopper season 2 arrives on Netflix on Aug. 3, and we can hardly contain our excitement!

The teen series is based on the bestselling graphic novel series of the same name by Alice Oseman. The first season was based on Volumes 1 and 2 of Oseman’s work, and tells a wonderful boy-meets-boy queer love story. It stars His Dark Materials actor Kit Connor as kind-hearted and gentle popular high-school student Nick Nelson, who makes an effort to befriend Charlie Spring (newcomer Joe Locke). But as their friendship blossoms, both start to realize that there could be something more brewing between them. The second season is based on Volume 3.

Heartstopper books: How to read and where to buy

The Heartstopper books are a series of graphic novels written by award-winning YA author Alice Osema. The novels tell a gorgeous coming-of-age story which follows the blossoming romance between Charlie and Nick as they “meet, become friends and start to fall in love.”

Currently, there are four books in the series, which we recommend you read in order. Hopefully, it’s fairly obvious that the best way to read the series is by following the order of the volumes.

So, to begin with, you’ll want to pick up Heartstopper Volume One, which was published in 2018, followed by Heartstopper Volume Two, published in 2019, Heartstopper Volume Three, published in 2020, and then wrap things off, you’ll want to end with Heartstopper Volume Four. Will there be a season 3 of Heartstopper?

Yes! Back in May 2022, Netflix renewed the teen series for a second and third season. The second season lands on Netflix on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023. Heartstopper season 3 is currently in the works. Principal photography is rumored to start in October 2023, with an expected release sometime in 2024.
