Anatomy of a Scandal is the latest David E. Kelley creation hitting Netflix today, April 15. Kelley collaborated with House of Cards scribe Melissa James Gibson on this British psychological thriller. At just six episodes, each only running about 40-45 minutes each, the courtroom drama promises to be a quick and entertaining weekend binge-watch.

If you’re a fan of legal thrillers and some of Kelley’s previous shows then this one should be right up your alley. The series stars Sienna Miller, Rupert Friend, Michelle Dockery and Naomi Scott.

Anatomy of a Scandal recap guide: Episodes 1 to 6

Below we’ve gone through and recapped each of the first season’s six episodes. Anatomy of a Scandal revolves around a political sex scandal when parliamentary minister James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend) is accused of raping his former mistress. The story jumps back and forth between present-day Westminster and Oxford University in the 1990s (where James and Sophie attended school).

Anatomy of a Scandal episode 1 recap

Anatomy of a Scandal episode 1 opens with a steamy hookup happening in an elevator between Olivia Lytton (Naomi Scott) and James Whitehouse. From there we skip ahead to the day of reckoning, a day when the world will find out the truth about James’ affair.

It’s Christmastime in the U.K. and everything is falling apart for the Parliamentary minister when his affair with his 28-year-old parliamentary researcher is revealed to the world. James does his best to get ahead of the story by breaking the news of the steamy five-filled months to his wife the eve before The Daily Mail is set to tell the world.

Sophie Whitehouse (Sienna Miller) handles the affair with surprising grace and forgiveness—at least to her husband and the public eye. In private, it’s clear she’s struggling to wrap her mind around the affair, despite James’ insistence that it was nothing more than sex. Flashbacks tell us that’s probably not the full story and we also start seeing glimpses of Sophie and James in college, all the way back to where they first met over 12 years ago.

Throughout the first episode, Sophie has to work through her feelings regarding this entire scandal. Will she stand by her husband or walk out the door? Further complicating matters is Sophie’s adamancy that she not become like her mother, a long-suffering spouse who tolerates endless indiscretions from her husband. It’s cloying to be among the company of the upper-crust posh “boys will be boys” club that James’ surrounds himself with, one man even tells Sophie that “once is okay, two go away.” Really dude?

The affair looks like it might all be taken care of and handled since James is a revered politician and close friend of Prime Minister Tom Southern (Geoffrey Streatfeild). With the PM’s loyalty, it shouldn’t be too hard to get James back into the public’s good graces. The most important thing for him to do is remain contrite, ask for forgiveness and never deny anything (deflection and skirting the question is always better as denials tend to come back and bite).

Considering this is a six-episode miniseries, you get the sense that an even bigger bombshell is going to drop sooner than later. That additional bombshell involves Queen’s Counsel member Kate Woodcroft (Michelle Dockery) a workaholic riding high on the success of a recent trial when the latest high-profile case lands in her lap, The Queen vs. James Whitehouse.

Yes, the episode takes its time working up to the ending bombshell: Olivia is alleging that James raped her, specifically during their “hook-up” in the lift. It’s surely no coincidence so much attention is given to that specific encounter with the episode beginning by showing it in progress.

In the final moments of the episode, just as it seems Sophie and James have taken a solid step forward together with James promising to make amends with her no matter what it takes, even offering to resign if she asks him to (But she can’t can she? Not really, then she’d appear like the bad guy. And couldn’t James just be bluffing?)

We don’t find out, at least not yet. James and Sophie share a tender kiss and he ships her off in a cab back home, a renewed pep in his step. At least, until he’s approached by two detectives who deliver the news of Olivia’s allegation. Cue a really weird and cheesy editing decision to show James flying backward like he’s been sucked into The Matrix.

Anatomy of a Scandal episode 2 recap

Things move quickly in Anatomy of a Scandal episode 2. After Olivia makes her accusation against James, the media is immediately on top of him and Sophie, clamoring for answers and wondering how Sophie can sleep with an accused rapist. Through it all, the Prime Minister remains loyal to James, drawing raised eyebrows from many of his constituents. If James is convicted how will it reflect on the government?

At least one person asks the PM if James has something on him to generate such loyalty to which Tom responds that James is accused, not yet convicted and should be perceived innocent until proven otherwise. That said, Tom still asks James point-blank whether he raped Olivia or not.

James denies Olivia’s claim and immediately tells Sophie what happened after the detectives corner him outside of Parliament. Sophie had just started to wrap her mind around the affair, only for this new development to crop up and now she’s left questioning her husband yet again, whether she wants to admit it or not.

The trial moves forward, set for three months down the line. Barrister Kate Woodcroft represents the Queen’s Counsel (or the prosecution as we would refer to it in America) while QC Angela Regan (Josette Simon) is James’ defense. Between the time of the bail hearing and the trial start date, James tries to mollify his children and keep them distracted from the media frenzy with a new puppy, who they affectionately dub “Velcro.”

Before Anatomy of a Scandal skips ahead to the trial, we take a brief detour to the past again. This time, we get to see more of what Sophie was like in college. In the present, she and James have a frank discussion of her schooling and Sophie’s desire to return to literature and look for a new job once everything blows over. James jokes that she used to complain about her old job in children’s lit, but Sophie claims she just didn’t like the preschool division. “I didn’t mean to imply you weren’t a serious student,” James adds.

Well, the flashback indicates that Sophie wasn’t a good student. She’s shown using her friend Holly Berry (Nancy Farino) to do all her work and trading beers for essays instead of doing the assignments herself. The foray into the past doesn’t reflect well on James either, as we see him at a raucous party with his frat-like group of fellow Libertines.

One of his friends gropes a horrified waitress in front of everyone and they all laugh it off. James watches the incident and tries to pay her for her troubles (or to keep quiet) before brushing the entire incident off. It’s yet another textbook example of the “boys will be boys” mentality and toxic sexism running rampant in James’ youth.

At one point in the episode, he also calls Kate Woodcroft a c*nt, claiming he’s just using a word he heard another man use to refer to her as if that makes it any better. James definitely has misogynistic tendencies that stem from his posh, white-privileged, straight male upbringing. But does that mean he raped Olivia? We’ll find soon find out.

We skip ahead to the trial start date. An apprehensive Sophie agrees to attend court to show support for James. He manipulates her into it by mentioning if she skips court, it’ll look like she thinks James is guilty.

Olivia takes the stand and relays how their relationship started. It sounds similar to what James has said thus far, except for one thing: Olivia says she was in love with James, a far cry from James telling Sophie that the entire thing was meaningless and “just sex.” Maybe that’s true on his end. Maybe he didn’t know Olivia loved him. I find that hard to believe and apparently so does Sophie since Olivia’s revelation sends her reeling.

She immediately leaves the courtroom, hops in a cab and heads home. Spinning out, Sophie can’t help but imagine Olivia and James together and she faints. The episode ends with yet another weird, melodramatic edited sequence of Sophie envisioning herself falling through the floor and down into the courtroom. Is every episode going to end with someone flying around?!

Anatomy of a Scandal episode 3 recap

James’ counsel takes center stage, another woman comes forward and a shocking revelation about James and Tom’s friendship is revealed in Anatomy of a Scandal episode 3.

The episode picks up shortly after Olivia’s confession in episode 2, with Tom apologizing to Sophie and assuring her that he does not share the same feelings for Olivia that she does for him. Sophie recovers and seems to believe James, agreeing to return to court the next day. Kate continues pressing Olivia for details on her story in a riveting sequence that showcases Naomi Scott’s talent. Olivia is forced to recount the assault to the jury as Kate pushes for accurate and concise details.

According to Olivia, James was upset that day because a reporter wrote poorly about him in an article. He storms out of the commons and Olivia follows him. He asks her if she thinks he’s arrogant, as the reporter suggested. Olivia says “arrogant” isn’t the right word, that he can be cruel sometimes but that also arrogance can be terribly attractive. Then he gets into the lift and holds the door open, suggesting she follow. Olivia claims she did so because she hoped James was interested in rekindling their relationship.

They kiss passionately, and James wrenches open her blouse to get at her breasts, biting her painfully on the left one, leaving behind a sizable bruise. Olivia submits a photo of the bruise into evidence. She tells the court that the bite was painful and it was the moment the encounter changed from a heated hookup to assault.

They were in a public place with a meeting just minutes away, Olivia didn’t want someone to catch them. She told James “not here” but he persisted, ripping her underwear and penetrating her moments later, going on to call her a “pr*ck tease” when she struggled against him.

During the cross-examination, Angela rises to the challenge on James’ behalf. She attempts to poke multiple holes in Olivia’s recount. Olivia says she feared someone would see them, but Angela challenges her on this point as she and James had had sex several times in the offices before. Why would she suddenly be afraid? Also, she knew they had a meeting in a few minutes, yet she got into the lift anyway in the hopes James would take her somewhere private.

And despite claiming she did not want things to progress the way they did, not once in her statement does Olivia tell the jury she told James “no” or “stop.” All she said was “not here.” Angela also points out that her blouse was not torn and even though her panties were ripped (which is also submitted to evidence) the fabric could have been thin and easily torn. Or perhaps Olivia ripped them herself earlier that day.

Of course, Angela’s assertions don’t mean Olivia was not raped, at all, especially if she was clearly pushing James away from her, a fact the barrister doesn’t engage with despite Olivia’s persistent claims she physically shoved him but James ignored her and kept going. That said, there isn’t tons of evidence in this case and it’s going to be hard to prove. Olivia is clearly rattled and she’s moved to tears by the end of the session.

At home, James and Sophie are under the impression it was a good day in court and things are looking up for them. Based on Angela’s performance and the lack of physical evidence, it looks like James might be found innocent.

But then Chris Clarke (Joshua Mcguire), the Prime Minister’s right-hand man, shows up on James’ doorstep bringing yet another bombshell: another woman has come forward. It’s someone else we’ve already met, Sophie’s tutorial aide partner from Oxford, Holly Berry, who has appeared in various flashbacks.

This new revelation is the final straw for Sophie, whose faith in her husband has finally been thoroughly shaken. It’ll be interesting to see if she can continue standing by his side after this, despite James swearing up and down that he doesn’t even know who she is, though he can’t rule out having had sex with her since he was a known lothario in college. Despite this, he assures Sophie that while he might have hooked up with a lot of people, he never assaulted anyone.

One of the more interesting reveals in this episode comes from a conversation between James and Tom Southern (the Prime Minister). After Holly comes forward, Tom tells James he’s been put in a challenging position. The conservative party is not happy that Tom continues to stand by James as they’d prefer to save face and cut him loose. The thing is, James and Tom have history. Chris was not wrong in his assumption that James “has something” on Tom.

During their days as Libertines at Oxford, James found Tom using heroin with their friend Alec on a rooftop during a party. James forced Tom to stop using and got him out of there. On their way back to their flat, the pair saw Alec standing over the edge of the rooftop and Tom urged him to “fly.” Seeing as Alec was high on the drugs Tom supplied, he listens and jumps. You can guess what happened next (Alec jumped off the roof and dies).

James and Tom rush home with James assuring Tom everything will be okay as long as they pretend they were never there. But Tom gave Alec the drugs and encouraged him to jump. A scandal like that would end his political career before it even begins, so he’s eternally thankful to James for getting him out of that mess. “I owe you for life.” And now James is planning to cash in on that favor by strongly encouraging Tom to remain loyal.

Anatomy of a Scandal episode 4 recap

Everyone’s mind is on the case as Sophie starts dreaming about Holly and Kate struggles with what she should do next. Richard, a lawyer who Kate is seeing despite him being married to someone else, grows suspicious of why she’s taking the whole thing so personally, though she combats his questions.

Sophie decides she won’t be going to court and instead will be taking the kids to the country to visit James’ parents, although James and Chris advise her against it. She tells James she had a nightmare about Holly accusing him, to which he gets defensive.

While on the way to the courtroom, Angela confronts Kate about a potential other accusation against James, and Angela is visibly shaken. She calls up her friend in distress, who becomes worried about her. Tensions continue to rise as viewers realize maybe there really is something about the case that Kate is hiding.

Sophie spends time with James’ parents, who are unsurprisingly on his side and angry that he’s in the situation. James’ mother recalls he was always “over-confident” growing up and often cheated in games of Monopoly. Of course, this is a red flag for Sophie who asks why his mom would condone lying at a young age. They have a tough conversation while Sophie starts to realize that women shouldn’t just sit back and be complicit while men do whatever they want.

Over at the courthouse, Kate questions one of Olivia’s friends, Kitty (Kathryn Wilder), who recounts Olivia calling her after the incident with James. For Angela’s turn questioning, she suggests that perhaps Kitty told Olivia to go to the police simply because she didn’t approve of her relationship with James. Kitty denies this and says she told her to report the incident because it was rape.

James returns home and eats ice cream with the kids’ nanny, Krystyna (Violet Verigo), where he thanks her for taking such good care of the children and asks her about her life. It’s kind of a strange scene, as because the viewer is already very suspicious of James, it seems like he might be coming onto her. Fortunately, nothing escalates.

Sophie and James have a tense conversation at home where Sophie says they’re no longer lucky and questions some of the details of James’ affair with Olivia. She brings up Holly, saying she can’t  let it go. James deflects and scolds her for not going to court that day, but Sophie keeps pressing. Sophie remembers a night out at Oxford but gets confused with her memory.

After James goes to sleep, Sophie has a vision of that night at Oxford again. We see Holly walking home from a party only to bump into James. They’re both seemingly very drunk, and James gets aggressive by ripping her clothes. When Holly tries to leave, James pulls her back in and calls her a “pr*ck tease” (the same language Olivia alleged he used with her), sexually assaulting her. We then cut to Kate in present-day, as if she was having the same vision. She sees a young Holly behind her and picks up the phone to call her mom.

We get a major bombshell here and the biggest plot twist of the show. When Kate calls her mom, she says, “It’s Holly.” This reveals that Kate is actually Holly and has been using a new identity as a woman named Kate. This adds a whole extra layer to her investment in the case. And of course, it makes Kate’s acceptance of the case very unethical.

Anatomy of a Scandal episode 5 recap

Episode 5 opens up with Kate visiting a friend named Ali in the middle of the night. This is where Kate finally comes clean as she reveals to her that James raped her at school. Of course, given the final moments of episode 4, we already knew this. Ali asks if she could be fired for taking on the case, to which Kate says yes.

Despite this, Kate continues with the trial and next up we get more flashbacks from Sophie during her Oxford days. We go back in time and see James open up to Sophie about Alec’s death, and he asks if Sophie would be his alibi. With every flashback, it seems present-day Sophie is realizing that the signs were there. James wasn’t the man she thought he was.

At the courthouse, Sophie and Kate make eye contact and Sophie starts to piece together the pieces that they were once friends in school, though she doesn’t realize how she knows her right away. James goes up on the stand and is questioned by Angela on his affair with Olivia. Instead of maintaining that he and Olivia didn’t have feelings for one another as he told Sophie, James tells the jury how much they cared for each other, naming what they had in common and even a gift he got her for her birthday. “We were equally invested in each other,” he states.

Of course, this upsets Sophie who was under the impression James’ relationship with Olivia was just sex.

James then recalls what happened from his point of view in the lift with Olivia, claiming she was the one who initiated the hook-up.

Kate takes her turn questioning James, although we can tell she’s very shaken, drilling him on his intentions and whether or not James thought he would have sex with Olivia before getting on the lift. While this is happening, James has flashbacks from Oxford where he assaults Holly.

Sophie and James’ car ride after is understandably very awkward and we see Kate struggle to write her closing statement as she has flashbacks from school. The episode ends on a surprising note when Kate has an unexpected guest at her door—Sophie.

Anatomy of a Scandal episode 6 recap

Sophie arrives at Kate’s looking for answers. She asks if they had met before, whether or not she attended Oxford, or if she knew Holly. Kate shuts down the questions and urges Sophie to leave, but not before Sophie realizes something major. We get more visions, this time James imagining all of his accusers before his kids awaken him from his daydream.

Kate stops by Ali’s in the middle of the night again and tells her she thinks Sophie knows her true identity. She’s understandably freaking out that she might lose her job, though Ali tells her she shouldn’t worry because James won’t out her and risk looking guilty.

Sophie returns home past midnight and is confronted by James who asks why she was out so late. He tells her he might lose the case in court the next day and comes clean about Holly — sort of — as he admits to being with her that night at Oxford but not to raping her. Sophie is shocked, in disbelief that he could have sex with someone he barely knew during the same night that Alec died.

James tries to cover his tracks about the accusation by telling Sophie that Holly was a virgin and the experience might not have been what she was expecting her first time to be. “It was certainly 100% not rape,” he claims. James goes on to reveal the big detail about Alec’s death, admitting that he lied for Tom to cover up his drug use. As you’d expect, this leaves James and Sophie in an even worse place.

We cut to the trial, where Kate and Angela give their closing statements. The two discuss the case afterwards and it’s obvious Angela is relieved it’s all coming to an end, while we know it’ll never truly end for Kate because of her personal investment. Finally, hours later, there’s a verdict.

The jury finds James not guilty, which understandably hits Kate like a brick. Sophie even looks disappointed, and an annoying Chris tells her, “That’s our boy. Dodged another bullet, didn’t he?” Chilling.

While walking out of the courtroom, Kate and Sophie pass each other and their eye contact speaks volumes without either of them having to actually say anything. Sophie stands by James’ side as he talks to the press and notes that his family was there for him through it all. Sophie is shaken and can’t say a word.

We cut to Kate at home who’s watching James on the news and having a fit, unsurprisingly. Ali walks in and the two share an embrace, while James is at home celebrating and getting ready to get back to work. He’s accepted back by Tom with open arms and has no regrets about how everything turned out.

Sophie confronts James yet again and he maintains that he would never rape someone, though it’s obvious she’s becoming more and more unsure. Sophie goes off and finds Ali, asking where she can find Holly. At first, Ali denies that Holly is Kate, but Sophie doesn’t believe it. “The answer’s yes,” Ali then says as Sophie walks away.

Panicked after Ali tells Kate she told Sophie, Kate comes clean to Richard about everything, who tells her not to confess. Meanwhile, Sophie decides she’s leaving James even though he doesn’t understand and she packs up her things. She needs to discover who she is without him, and that’s exactly what she plans to do.

Sophie and Kate meet and Kate explains why she didn’t report James for raping her back then, because she didn’t think anyone would believe her. In a surprise move, Sophie says she’s going to reveal James and Tom’s big secret from that night to the press.

In the final moments of the episode, we see Sophie out in the country having fun with her kids, while Kate puts on her wig and walks throughout the courtroom.
