A new British TV comedy series will be coming to Netflix on April 12, and it’s called Hard Cell. Writer and creator Catherine Tate plays multiple characters in this deadpan comedy that takes a realistic yet humorous look at life in a women’s prison.
Tate is an English actress, writer and comedian perhaps best known for playing Donna Noble in Doctor Who. She has won many awards throughout her career, notably for her work on the BBC sketch comedy The Catherine Tate Show.
Now the acclaimed entertainer will get to show off her incredible talents yet again in a comical new series where she gets to portray everyone from a psychopath to an optimistic rehabilitator.
Before Hard Cell debuts on Netflix, we’re going to share all the important details about the series right below!
Hard Cell synopsis
Hard Cell is a mockumentary comedy set in a fictional women’s prison. Tate portrays six characters on the show, including a psychopathic lifer, the prison governor who thinks creativity leads to rehabilitation, an Essex guard, a timid first-timer and more.
The first season is set over a six-week period in which the inmates rehearse a musical directed by ex-Eastender‘s star Cheryl Fergison. Throughout the rehearsals, this oddball assortment of women find their voices and strengthen their friendships. Hard Cell aims to shed a comical light on prison life. It sounds perfect for anyone missing Orange is the New Black.
Here’s the official logline via Netflix:
"Events planner-turned-women’s prison governor Laura Willis documents the thrills and spills of life behind bars in this delightfully dry comedy series."
The first season consists of six episodes total. Episodes 1-6 will be released on Netflix on Tuesday, April 12. It’s rated TV-MA for language, meaning it’s for mature audiences only. So you’ll want to make sure the kids are occupied before you hit play on Hard Cell.
