Green Eggs and Ham premiered on Netflix to critical acclaim in November 2019 and was quickly renewed by the streaming service the month after. Since then, it has built up a loyal fanbase who have eagerly been waiting for Green Eggs and Ham season 2, which finally premiered today, April 8.

Since its inception, Green Eggs and Ham has been lauded as one of the best (if not the best) Dr. Seuss adaptations. Considering the lengthy wait between seasons, it’s no wonder fans have been anxious to find out whether the new season would match the first in terms of quality.

I’m happy to say that it does! Even though Green Eggs and Ham season 2 is three episodes shorter than its predecessor, it’s still plenty entertaining. I loved getting to see our favorite characters travel to new and exotic locations as they hunt for Sam’s mom, Pam-I-Am (Patricia Clarkson) and then get wrapped up in The Butter Battle between warring countries Zookia and Yookia (The Second Serving borrows plot elements from Seuss’ The Butter Battle Book).

The story picks up soon after the season 1 finale, with Sam (Adam DeVine) preparing to travel across the globe to Ma’s Farm in East Flurbia. After eating a specific plate of green eggs and ham at a diner, Sam recognizes the eggs as the same brand his mom would use to cook for him as a kid.

There’s a time skip between seasons since when we pick up, Guy (Michael Douglas) and Michellee (Diane Keaton) have gotten married and settled into a life of pleasant domesticity with E.B. (Ilana Glazer). Guy even opens a new Inventorium in Glurfsburg, preventing him from joining Sam on his mission–at least until the whole building blows up. Michelle even gives E.B. permission to join them, and off they go!

By the end of episode one, we learn that Pam is an international super spy trying to track down a volatile item called the Moo-Lacka-Moo and deliver it to the Zooks so they can create world peace with the Yooks.

Some fans might be upset that Sam and Guy don’t get as many scenes together this season, with full episodes devoted to their respective individual plots and other characters. Personally, I appreciated that Green Eggs and Ham season 2 broadens the show’s universe and introduces us to new characters and lands. The animation is as beautiful as ever and really gets a chance to shine this season with the exotic locales and spy action.

Sam and Pam spend several episodes together on a spy mission to reclaim the Moo-Lacka-Moo from Pam’s rival Philip Trousers (Rob Brydon), while Guy’s plot revolves around navigatinge his complex relationship with E.B. in a foreign land. E.B. and Guy end up in Zookia, with Guy almost immediately succumbing to the brainwashing that Zooks are better than Yooks.

It helps that the Dookess gives him special attention and even hires him as her new personal inventor with a promise to invite Michellee to live there, too, as her royal portrait painter. It all sounds too good to be true, which probably means that is, but you’ll have to watch to find out what happens!

I worried that Sam and Pam’s relationship would be a retread of Sam and Guy in season 1, with Pam hesitant to accept Sam’s exuberant personality and push him away at every turn. While it might start that way, the writers expediently move their relationship along and allow the two to create a new bond that veers away from hitting the same beats as the first season.

Season 2 has some very emotional scenes revolving around Sam and Pam. It was smart for the show to center on their relationship and build a renewed sense of trust between them. E.B. also gets a lot more time in the spotlight with a new Romeo-and-Juliet-esque love interest (Looka, the Yookia prince voiced by Darren Criss).

It’s great to see how the family dynamics are developing and changing between E.B. and Guy this season, and even Michellee, who has learned to trust her daughter more and loosen the reigns a bit.

What is the best episode from Green Eggs and Ham season 2?

I think season 2, episode 6, “You Only Mom Twice,” is a series standout. Sam and Pam end up on a mysterious tropical island with a few tricks up its sleeve. I don’t want to spoil the surprises, but it’s a beautifully-written episode that taps right into the heart of the mom-and-son relationship and, admittedly, made me tear up a little!

Is Green Eggs and Ham season 2 worth watching?

Yes! If you loved season 1, then season 2 is a must-watch. It’s just as good as the first season, if not better, with plenty of new characters, sights and locations. Here’s to hoping we get more seasons of this show in the future.
