We all know and love Mindy Kaling, and we also know and love her Netflix teen romantic comedy series Never Have I Ever. The third season of the hit series premieres in summer 2022 on Netflix, but the series has also been renewed for a fourth season.

However, Never Have I Ever season 4 will sadly be the final season of the fan-favorite comedy. It’s bittersweet, but at least we still have the third season to look forward to. Ahead of season 3’s release this summer, Mindy Kaling talked about the decision to end the series.

As we have all experienced these days, Netflix original series have something of an abbreviated shelf life. Some shows are canceled seemingly out of nowhere, while others just tend to have shorter runs than we’re used to with television series.

But the decision to end Never Have I Ever didn’t come from a Netflix cancellation. Rather, the choice for the fourth season to be the final season was a creative, character-driven decision to serve the narrative. Here’s what Kaling had to say about the series ending.

Mindy Kaling talks Never Have I Ever ending

Obviously, there’s four years of high school, and Mindy Kaling and the Never Have I Ever team realized that four seasons was the appropriate amount of time to spend telling Devi’s coming-of-age story.

Kaling clued Entertainment Tonight in on the decision to end Never Have I Ever:

"“Four seasons for a high school show felt like it made sense. They can’t be in high school forever. We’ve seen those shows. Like, you’ve been in high school for 12 years. What is going on here? Also, the actors get older and it starts looking insane that a 34-year-old is playing a 15-year-old.”"

As much as we would have loved to watch Devi explore her future post-high school, or even her first summer after graduating, the moment does seem right to bring the series to a natural ending instead of dragging out the finish lane and ultimately jumping the shark.

It’s comforting knowing the creative team will take care with crafting the perfect and, knowing Devi, super messy ending to see our girl ride off into the sunset. Kaling elaborated on the timing of the final season, stating that she feels great about when the series will end.

"“The great thing about doing it on Netflix is that we got to tell stories that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell in traditional network shows and so we feel good. We really told the story of this 15-year-old girl and that felt like the perfect amount of time.”"

We can’t wait to see what’s in store for Devi, Eleanor, Fabiola, Ben, and Paxton in Never Have I Ever season 4. But first, get ready to watch the latest episodes of the teen rom-com coming to Netflix this summer.
