Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King is Netflix’s latest true crime documentary film. The movie explores the mysterious death of cryptocurrency entrepreneur and QuadrigaCX founder Gerald “Gerry” Cotten. Did Gerry actually die? Or did he fake his death and make off with millions of dollars in consumer funds? Read more about Gerry and the truth about his death right here.

This piece will focus on Gerry’s wife, now widow, Jennifer Robertson, who became an object of scrutiny herself after Gerry’s purported death. Many believed that Jennifer was in cahoots with her husband and part of the fraud, but is that actually true? Is there evidence to support those claims? Keep reading to find out everything we know about Jennifer and her current whereabouts.

The Hunt for the Crypto King: Who is Jennifer Robertson?

Jennifer Robertson is Gerry Cotten’s widow. The pair met in 2014 on Tinder. Supposedly Gerry was the very first person Jennifer swiped right on when she started using the app. Gerry was 26-years-old when they first met and just getting into Bitcoin. He quickly started turning a profit and the pair lived a pretty cushy life. His money helped Jennifer finance her own real estate company.

The Hunt for the Crypto King: Did Jennifer Robertson go to jail?

No, Jennifer Robertson is not under any investigation and she never faced criminal charges. After her husband’s death, Jennifer forfeited $12 million in assets that included real estate and vehicles. CBC reports that she was allowed to keep some things, like $90,000 in cash, $20,000 in retirement savings, some jewelry, furniture and a 2015 Jeep Cherokee.

The Hunt for the Crypto King: Why did Jennifer Robertson change her name three times?

One of the reasons people suspected Jennifer was up to something sketchy is because she changed her name three times in the span of 2-3 years. She started as Jennifer Griffith, her maiden name, and then when she got married the first time it changed to “Forgeron.”

After her divorce, Jennifer decided she never liked the surname “Griffith” and changed it to “Robertson.” She never took Cotten’s last name. When it’s explained like that, the name changes really don’t seem all that strange.

The Hunt for the Crypto King: Did Jennifer Robertson have anything to do with Gerry’s death?

There is no evidence that Jennifer had anything to do with her husband’s death. Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King establishes that internet sleuths succumbed to misogyny and conspiracy theories regarding Jennifer’s alleged involvement with the Quadriga scam, but let’s go into why people think he might have killed Gerry or, at the very least, known what was going on with Quadriga.

  • Just 12 days before Gerry died, he filed his will leaving everything, all of his money and assets, to Jennifer.
  • The aforementioned name changes, specifically the fact that a man named Michael Forgeron died under mysterious circumstances and people thought Michael was Jennifer’s ex-husband.
    • Jennifer’s sister, Kimberly, says Jennifer’s first husband is alive and well, and that his name wasn’t even Michael. It’s easy enough to confirm all of that, so it makes no sense for it to be a lie.

Ultimately the will and name changes made the online group go feral, as you’ll see in the documentary. Jenn received numerous death threats, she was doxxed and there was tons of sexist language used against her.

I think people became so desperate for someone to burn at the stake and take responsibility that their fury obfuscated the facts. Gerry was dead and out of the picture, so they needed a new scapegoat. I understand the anger over losing all of your money and knowing no one will ever be held accountable, but it sounds like what happened to Jennifer was an example of how harmful groupthink and online conspiracy theories can be.

The most egregious thing regarding Jennifer is the fact that her property management company, Robertson Nova Consulting, received some transfers from Quadriga users. However, it’s possible Gerry used her company without her knowledge, or that she didn’t know what it was being used for; Jennifer’s lawyers declined to comment.

There’s also the funeral intel from an anonymous Reddit user, an alleged former Quadriga contractor who did an AMA on the site (basically a Q&A). The user claimed Jennifer was “fake grieving” at the funeral. They further claimed that there was conflict between Jennifer and Gerry’s parents because Jennifer’s family hosted an Irish wake complete with drinking and dancing. Gerry’s parents were supposedly kicked out.

This user is just one random person, so it’s important to take their recollection with a grain of salt. Unless they were close with Jennifer, how would they know she was “faking” her grief? And even if she was drinking or dancing, that doesn’t necessarily mean she didn’t love Gerry or that he was faking his death and she was in on it.

The Hunt for the Crypto King: Where is Jennifer Robertson now?

Because of everything that happened, including the death threats, Jennifer was taken to live in a safe house. Her sister Kimberly claimed that she didn’t even know where her sister was living. Nowadays, she is living in Nova Scotia.

This past January, Jennifer released a book detailing her side of the story, BitCoin Widow: Love, Betrayal and the Missing Millions, which you can purchase on Amazon if you’re interested in finding out more.

In a rare interview with CBC’s The National, Jennifer maintained her innocence and claimed she knew nothing of her husband’s widespread fraud. According to her, she didn’t understand how Quadriga worked and mostly did what she was told, which would explain her management company’s involvement.

"“I hadn’t understood how Quadriga had held money in the first place; I thought it was just a trade. There [were] many things about Quadriga that I didn’t understand.”"

Regarding her feelings on Gerry Cotten, Jennifer said it never occurred to her he was doing something criminal and that he “was the nicest, caring, most loving husband. He was my best friend.… It’s a possibility that I was wearing rose-colored glasses.”

Jennifer also adds that she was with Gerry when he died, and that it was a very real, painful experience.

"“I saw Gerry die, I was holding his hand when he passed away. It was a terrible, terrible moment.”"

Ultimately she says she’s very sorry for the pain her husband caused:

"“I would have never, ever stolen from other people. And the fact that he did what he did — I carry his shame with me. And I’ll carry that shame with me, probably, every single day for the rest of my life.”"

Here is an interview she did recently with CTV Your Morning:

In the interview, Jennifer reveals that she is doing much better now. She returned to school and has started a new teaching job. Jennifer was also pregnant at the time of the interview, although she might have given birth since that time.
