The Power of the Dog was Netflix’s Oscar to lose at the 94th Academy Awards. As one of the most nominated and discussed films of awards season, the Jane Campion-directed film generated a lot of buzz and conversation. The race mostly seemed to come down to this movie and the Apple TV+ film CODA.

Additional nominations included fellow Netflix film Don’t Look Up, Nightmare Alley, Dune, Drive My Car, Belfast, Licorice Pizza, King Richard and West Side Story.

But not only did the film get nominated for the biggest award of the night, The Power of the Dog was also up for several other awards, such as:

  • Best Director: Jane Campion
  • Best Actor: Benedict Cumberbatch
  • Best Supporting Actor: Jesse Plemons
  • Best Supporting Actor: Kodi Smit-McPhee
  • Best Supporting Actress: Kirsten Dunst
  • Best Adapted Screenplay: Jane Campion
  • Best Cinematography: Ari Wegner
  • Best Film Editing: Peter Sciberras
  • Best Original Score: Jonny Greenwood
  • Best Production Design: Grant Major and Amber Richards
  • Best Sound: Richard Flynn, Robert Mackenzie and Tara Webb

Out of the above awards, the movie won only one for Best Director, which was still a historic win as so few women have won in that category.

Did The Power of the Dog win the Best Picture Oscar?

Sadly no, The Power of the Dog did not win Best Picture. That prestigious award went to the Apple TV+ film CODA instead. Even though it’s unfortunate that Netflix lost this one, the fact that a movie on a streamer won at all is still a pretty big deal and could pave the way for future Netflix wins.

As for the other nominations, The Power of the Dog lost many of its awards to Dune, which swept the craft categories at the Oscar pre-shows.

Are you happy that CODA won the award for Best Picture? Do you think that The Power of the Dog should have won instead?
