Rege-Jean Page was a breakout star of Bridgerton‘s first season, but did the man responsible for bringing Simon Basset to life return for the show’s second season?

That’s the burning question on the mind of every Bridgerton fan who fell in love with the dashing and charming Duke of Hastings across the first season of the Shondaland Original drama.

Leading up to the second season’s arrival on March 25, word broke that Page had decided not to ink a new deal with the series. However, if there is one thing entertainment fans have come to know, it’s that you can never say never when it comes to surprise returns. Just look at how Andrew Garfield adamantly rejected rumors of his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home only to end up appearing in a sizable able in the film.

Is Rege-Jean Page in Bridgerton season 2?

Unfortunately, Rege-Jean Page does not appear in Bridgerton season 2. Ahead of season 2’s debut on March 25, it was revealed that Page would not be reprising his role as Simon Basset.

Despite these reports, fans were optimistic Page might make a surprise appearance in the season. However, we can confirm Page does not appear in any season 2 episode and indeed did not return, even for a cameo.

Why didn’t Rege-Jean Page return for Bridgerton season 2?

It’s not uncommon for cast members to come and go from shows, but it’s definitely not every day a new series loses its breakout star after only one season. So what exactly led to Rege-Jean Page leaving Bridgerton after only one season as the Duke of Hastings?

As it turns out, when Page signed onto the series he only agreed to a one-season deal — something that drew him to the part. In an interview with Variety announcing his departure, Page made it clear that the idea of being a part of a single season that contained a beginning, middle and end was something that caught his eye.

"“It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end – give us a year. [I thought] ‘That’s interesting,’ because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on,” Page revealed when addressing his decision to leave the series back in April 2021."

"“I have nothing but excitement for Briderton continuing to steam train off and conquer the globe,” Page continued. “But there is also value in completing these arcs and sticking the landing.”"

Are Simon and Daphne still together in Bridgerton season 2?

Rege-Jean Page might not have returned as Simon Basset in season 2 of Bridgerton, but his absence did not lead to the end of Simon and Daphne’s love story. While Simon does not appear in season 2, he and Daphne are still happily married and are indeed still together in season 2.

Because Simon is alive and well in the series, and still happily married to Daphne there is always a chance the writers could find a way to bring the character back for future seasons. While it’s unclear whether Page will ever return as Simon, fans can at least rest at ease in knowing Simon and Daphne’s happily ever after is still intact.
