Bridgerton season 2 is finally out and it’s what everyone seems to be watching.

The first season was a smash-hit, so it comes as no surprise that people are enjoying the second season. The second season introduces viewers to a complicated yet beautiful love story between the eldest Bridgerton, Anthony Bridgerton and his new love interest, Kate Sharma.

We’ve seen many fan questions regarding the love story between Anthony and Kate in Bridgerton season 2, but a new question that keeps popping up is about Kate’s playful dog, Newton. He might not be the main star in the hit original series, but you can’t help but pay attention to him every time he’s on-screen. He’s just so cute!

If you’re curious about what breed of dog Newton is, you don’t have to wonder any longer. Below, we shared the exact breed of dog and more!

What type of dog is Newton in Bridgerton season 2?

Newton is a Corgi. More specifically, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. He is a cattle herding dog that has origins in Pembrokeshire, Wales. You might recognize this dog breed as Queen Elizabeth II’s preferred breed. She has always been known to keep a Pembroke Welsh Corgi by her side. It was the favored breed by British royalty for many years.

They are known to have erect ears, a fox-like shaped head, and a low-slung frame. They’re good family dogs and very protective. However, they can be stubborn at times. Therefore, it’s important that proper training is given or they will train you.

Is Newton in the Bridgerton books?

Yes! Newton is in one of the Bridgerton books by Julia Quinn. He makes his appearance in the second book, The Viscount Who Loved Me. In the book, he’s described as being a somewhat overweight corgi. He is Kate’s loyal companion and is very protective of her. Kate would even describe him as an excellent judge of character. She would often base her first impressions of guests and potential suitors on if Newton liked them.

Who plays Newton in Bridgerton season 2?

A dog named Austin portrays Newton. Apparently, Austin is similar to the mischievous Newton. Simone Ashley (Kate Sharma), Charithra Chandran (Edwina Sharma), and Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton) spoke with EW about their experience working with Austin on set.

Charithra said, “Austin was not necessarily the best behaved dog. But there were so many hilarious moments. There was a scene where he’s outside and you had to get him to sit by feeding him treats. At one point, he was so full on all the treats, he just fell asleep on the set in the middle of his shot.”

Jonathan spoke about how he and Austin didn’t really get along. He said, “Austin played Newton and it’s a sterling, stunning performance, but do you know what? We didn’t get on. He just loved the sausage and there’s nothing wrong with loving the sausage, but it was more the way we had to hold little crumbs of sausage in my hand to try and get him to jump in my lap.”

Simone talked about how Austin would eat stones and poop them out between takes. But she did go on and say that she formed a bond with Austin while filming. She said, “I’m really good with dogs, so he responded to me well. He was a little bit sass and goes off and does his own thing, but I like to think when we were together, he listened to me. Whenever we would do a line run and Newton was there, he would just get in the middle of the circle and roll on his back and be like, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ That was quite cute.”

Newton was a great cast addition in the new season! Make sure to continue streaming Bridgerton season 2 only on Netflix.
