Many fans were obsessed with Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) from season 1, but now everyone’s new obsession is the eldest Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey). In season 1, we learn that Simon became the Duke of Hastings after his father passed away. We also learn that Anthony Bridgerton claimed his late father’s title of Viscount and became the head of his family.

Obviously, both royal titles are of importance. But which royal title is higher than the other? Read on because we answer this question and break down the royal titles in order from the highest-ranking to the lowest ranking below.

Is the Duke higher than the Viscount in Bridgerton?

Yes! This is true, not only in Bridgerton but also in real life. So, this means that Simon has a higher title than Anthony. In fact, Simon’s royal title is much higher than Anthony’s when looking at the British peerage system.

The Duke is the highest possible rank in the British peerage system. The title was first introduced in 1337 by Edward III. Coming in second is the Marquess, which was created in 1387 by Richard II. The third order of the peerage system is the Earl. Then, there’s the Viscount coming in at the fourth rank. Henry VI first introduced the title in 1440. Lastly, you have the Barron, which is the lowest rank in the peerage system.

It’s very interesting to see how each title is ranked and how one comes to claim a royal title. What are your thoughts on the British peerage system? Also, continue streaming Bridgerton season 2 only on Netflix.
