Netflix Wednesday: Will Christina Ricci play Wednesday Addams again?
By Mads Lennon
Netflix Wednesday, the highly-anticipated upcoming Addams Family spinoff series centering on fan-favorite character Wednesday Addams, is coming soon to Netflix and we just found out that Christina Ricci has joined the cast!
Addams Family fans know that Ricci helped popularize the role of Wednesday Addams with her starring roles in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values. Jenna Ortega will play the title character in the upcoming Netflix Wednesday series directed by Tim Burton.
But with the news that Ricci has been cast in the show, many fans are curious what role she will play. Could she return as Wednesday, perhaps as an older version of Ortega or in a dream sequence? Here’s what we know.
Christina Ricci will not play Wednesday Addams in Netflix Wednesday
Reports suggest Ricci will play a new character and that her casting is more of a meta/fanservice decision. When news of a Netflix Wednesday series first surfaced, fans even started an online petition to see Ricci cast in the show.
It’s not dissimilar to when WandaVision cast Evan Peters to portray Wanda’s brother Pietro Maximoff. Even though Aaron Johnson played the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men fans had come to love Peters’ work in the previously-separate X-Men universe.
Deadline confirmed that Ricci would be playing a different character, although details are being kept under wraps so that it will remain a surprise for fans. It’s interesting to note that the article says she is playing a “new character,” so I wonder if she could be some long-lost Addams family relative.
Either way, it’s exciting to have Ricci returning to the franchise. Coming off the acclaimed series Yellowjackets, which became a huge word-of-mouth hit during its freshman season, Ricci and her co-stars are very hot commodities right now. Most of the adult actresses on the show have also been around since the 1990s, adding a sense of nostalgic charm to their recent renaissance that Wednesday clearly hopes to tap into.
