Black Summer fans have been waiting since June 2021 for news on the post-apocalyptic drama starring actress Jaime King as one of the show’s main characters, Rose. We’re in 2024 now, and Netflix hasn't made an official announcement regarding the show's future, which isn't unusual since Netflix seems to leave it to creators to break the news to fans more often than not these days.
Well, according to a new report from What's on Netflix, Black Summer has officially been canceled. In April 2023, co-creator John Hyams responded to a fan tweet saying "sadly nah" regarding the show returning for a third season.
But hope was rekindled toward the end of the year due to a fake account claiming another season was in the works. Hyams responded to the claim at the end of December 2023, saying he didn't know anything about it.
Jaime King previously sounded hopeful about the show's future
Back in April 2021, King spoke fondly of the show in an interview with Express that came out a few months after the season 2 premiere. She said she had ideas for where the show could go in the third season and was “excited to get the writer’s room going again,” adding that Black Summer “is the kind of series that could go on forever, but I think it would be really powerful to do it in just three seasons, if possible.”
Her statement at the time appeared to indicate she would return for a third and potentially final season, which was gratifying to fans because her character's fate was left up in the air at the end of season 2. But obviously, we're now almost three years out from the time of that interview and a lot has changed.
Overall, it seems like it's time to accept the fate of Black Summer and move on as it doesn't look like Netflix has any intentions of bringing the show back for another season.
