Netflix shows we’ll miss in 2022: Atypical

Seasons: 4

Created by: Robia Rashid

Starring: Jennifer Jason Leigh, Keir Gilchrist, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Amy Okuda, Michael Rapaport, Fivel Stewart, Nik Dodani, and Jenna Boyd

Atypical‘s fourth and final season was released on Netflix in July 2021. This would be the last time we watch Sam Gardner on his path of self-discovery. I can’t promise you that I wasn’t crying my eyes out while watching the final season. It was too hard to say goodbye.

Atypical premiered in August 2017 and received mostly positive reviews from critics. Viewers enjoyed the first season as well but criticized the show for not having many autistic actors. The creative team took the audience’s feedback and made changes in the upcoming seasons.

What I enjoyed most about Atypical is that it attempted to educate viewers about autism. Although the show sometimes fell short of getting its point across, it tried to show viewers how being on the spectrum affects daily life. In addition, the teen series made sure to show how autism also affects the lives of family and friends. Finally, it made you think about how everyone is different. We all have our own quirks that make us different from one another. No one is “normal.”

Atypical might tackle some serious topics at times, but overall it’s a light-hearted series. You’ll find yourself laughing more often than not while watching the show. It’ll definitely be weird not seeing a new season of Atypical this year, but at least we know we can always go back and rewatch the entire series on Netflix. The teen series will always be remembered for telling unheard stories and bringing more positive representation. Thank you, Atypical.
