Stranger Things has captivated audiences since its debut in 2016. We’re coming up on six years with the Netflix original series that introduced viewers to Hawkins, Indiana in the ’80s and the Upside Down. However, nearly half of that time has been spent without a new season of the show landing on the streamer.

The last time we were dropped into El and the gang’s story was July 2019. Season 3 of Stranger Things took place over summer break. Its devastating ending, which left fans thinking Hopper was dead (at first) and El without her powers, had viewers clamoring for more.

The season was greenlit for a fourth season in September of 2019, but we’re now in 2022 and season 4 still hasn’t landed on Netflix. If you’re wondering why or if the show has even been canceled, we have you covered.

Here’s what we know about Stranger Things’ future on Netflix!

Has Stranger Things been canceled?

The series hasn’t been canceled. There’s been quite a delay between season 3 of the show and its fourth season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Stranger Things season 4 is slated for release in 2022. There’s been speculation on when that might be, but a release date has yet to be announced for the new season.

Will there be a Stranger Things season 5?

While the series hasn’t officially be renewed for a fifth season, signs are pointing in that direction. Netflix Life previously reported that the Duffer Brothers and actor David Harbour have spoken on the show continuing past season 4.

Ross Duffer told The Hollywood Reporter the following:

"Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story."

Is Stranger Things ending?

Bearing the above in mind, it does seem like we’re nearing the end of the series. Netflix even recently tweeted a rather cryptic billboard picture stating: Every ending has a beginning.

The lettering was upside down which was a dead giveaway that the billboard is referencing Stranger Things. The Twitter account for the series responded with an upside down smiley face emoji. While it hasn’t been confirmed that this is the streamer and the showrunners signaling that the end of the series is nigh, it looks like that could be the case.
