Netflix shows that might be canceled: The Chair

Seasons: 1

Created by: Amanda Peet & Annie Julia Wyman

Starring: Sandra Oh, Jay Duplass, Bob Balaban, Nana Mensah, Everly Carganilla, David Morse, and Holland Taylor

Grey’s Anatomy alumni Sandra Oh made her Netflix debut in The Chair on Aug. 20, 2021. Sadly, the comedy-drama series has not been renewed yet. It’s been six months since the show’s release, and fans have become increasingly worried that it won’t be returning for a second season. Surely we would’ve heard news of The Chair being renewed by now.

The Chair follows Professor Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh), the newly appointed chair of the failing English department at Pembroke University, as she tries to navigate her new job and role.

The comedy-drama series received generally favorable reviews by critics, and the people who watched the show seemed to enjoy it. It made it on the top 10 list but only lasted for seven days before dropping from the list. The Chair ranking on the top 10 list would have been good for its renewal chances, but it needed to remain on the list for at least 28 days. Netflix looks at this list to help determine if a show is worth renewing. Of course, other factors play a part as well.

The good news is that Netflix has not officially canceled The Chair, so there’s still a slight chance of a second season. However, Netflix sometimes quietly cancels shows. This basically means that the streamer doesn’t announce a show’s cancelation to the world. We just never see a continuation of a Netflix show again. Still, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Netflix will bring The Chair back for a second season.
