Great news for Russian Doll fans! After an arduous three-year long wait for the follow-up season, Russian Doll season 2 is finally on its way to Netflix. What a concept!

Natasha Lyonne stars in and co-created the comedy-drama series, which first premiered on Netflix in February 2019. Russian Doll was then renewed for a second season in June 2019, though the series at first seemed like a one-and-done limited series.

But we’ll take all the Russian Doll we can get! Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler also co-created the series centering on Lyonne’s character Nadia, who finds herself living her 36th birthday over and over again with each time resulting in her death.

Russian Doll season 2 was originally intended to begin production in March 2020, but filming was postponed until March 2021 due to the pandemic. Thankfully, production has now seemingly completed as Netflix announced a very exciting release date update.

Russian Doll season 2 release date update

On Feb. 11, Netflix confirmed that Russian Doll season 2 will be released in spring 2022. We’re closer than ever to seeing the next chapter of Nadia’s journey with time loops, mortality, and everything in between.

Of course, spring 2022 is something of a broad release time frame, but fans should expect the new episodes to drop on Netflix sometime in March, April, or May 2022. With most of March’s new releases already announced, April or May seems like a safe bet.

Check out the official synopsis from Netflix below:

"Set four years after Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) and Alan (Charlie Barnett) escaped mortality’s time loop together, season two of Russian Doll will continue to explore existential thematics through an often humorous and sci-fi lens. Discovering a fate even worse than endless death, this season finds Nadia and Alan delving deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations. At first they experience this as an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure but they soon discover this extraordinary event might be more than they bargained for and, together, must search for a way out."

Russian Doll season 2 sounds like a twisty, wild ride full of deeper existential questions and even more chances for thrilling comedy. Of course, Lyonne will reprise her role as Nadia, and Charlie Barnett returns as Alan, as does Greta Lee as Maxine.

Emmy-winning Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy joins the cast this season, though details on her character are being kept under wraps.

The first season of Russian Doll landed a number of Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Surely, season 2 will follow suit.
