It’s no secret that the Netflix Marvel shows were some of the biggest properties on the platform since their arrival in 2015 with Daredevil. However, it’s also no secret that the future of the Defenders series on Netflix came into question after their abrupt cancellations in 2019.

Following the successful debut of Daredevil, it seemed Netflix and Marvel had a fruitful partnership, producing six companion series to their theatrical universe. Along with Daredevil, these series included Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders limited series.

Unfortunately, when the series were each canceled and Marvel ended their partnership with Netflix, thus scrapping the mini Marvel universe on Netflix, fans started wondering about not only the futures of the characters in the MCU but the series’ lifespan on Netflix.

According to What’s on Netflix, Netflix has now started displaying removal notices for all six Netflix Marvel shows, which means they will each soon depart the platform. Let’s dig into why the Defenders series are leaving Netflix and when.

Why are the Marvel shows leaving Netflix?

When the Netflix Marvel shows were canceled, it was clear the reasoning had a lot to do with the imminent launch of Disney+ and the company retaining ownership of its biggest IP.

Although some Disney-owned content remains on Netflix (Grey’s Anatomy is the biggest that comes to mind), Disney started pulling its content from other services and reducing the practice of licensing outside of the Disney umbrella.

In many ways, it was only a matter of time until the Netflix Marvel shows were pulled, even though they are technically billed as Netflix originals. They are still owned by Disney, and there’s so much behind-the-scenes business red tape consumers aren’t privy to.

As of the discovery of the removal notice on Feb. 11, it’s unclear what Disney has planned for the Defenders series after removing them from Netflix. Fans will certainly have theories about where they might land and if we might see the characters back, but for now, this is where we are.
