Inventing Anna starts streaming on Netflix on Feb. 11 and finds Emmy-winning Ozark star Julia Garner stepping into the shoes of the infamous Anna Delvey. Along with bringing the notorious scammer to life, Garner puts on an interesting accent as Anna.
Based on Jessica Pressler’s New York magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People,” Inventing Anna centers on the unraveling of Anna Delvey’s various scams of New York’s wealthy by journalist Vivian Kent, played by Anna Chlumsky.
The series comes from Grey’s Anatomy creator and Bridgerton executive producer Shonda Rhimes, which will have everyone talking with its Scandal-esque tone and flair for true crime drama. But everyone will also be talking about that unmissable accent.
Is Julia Garner’s Anna Delvey accent Russian? German? Something completely different? Here’s how the Emmy winner describes her take on her real-life character’s accent.
Anna Delvey accent Inventing Anna
Since Anna Delvey, otherwise known by her real name Anna Sorokin, is a real person, Julia Garner had something tangible to pull from when crafting the character. Much has been made about where Anna is from, but she’s from Russian and pretended to be a German heiress.
Obviously, that twist influenced the way she spoke, since she lived in Germany when she was a teenager. While working her scams, she had to sell her German accent, though the Russian still lingered in her speech. Check out Delvey’s real-life accent here.
When dropping by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote Inventing Anna, Garner demonstrated how she mastered the Anna Delvey accent after meeting with her in prison. She starts with a Russian base, adds a heavy German inflection, and Americanizes it for extra impact.

In a nutshell, the accent Garner uses in the series is something of a Russian and German hybrid, but it’s definitely 100% unforgettable. But we all know Garner is a master of memorable accents after her show-stopping performance as Ruth in Ozark.
