Sweet Magnolias returned with a brand-new season on Feb. 4, and as you would have guessed, there’s plenty of drama to spare in the second season. The aftermath of the car accident cliffhanger is just the tip of the iceberg in Sweet Magnolias season 2.

Last season, Helen underwent some trials and tribulations in her romantic life with her on-again and off-again boyfriend Ryan. Unfortunately, the pair decide to call it quits when Helen expresses her desire to become a mother, and Ryan insists he doesn’t want children.

Thankfully, Sweet Magnolias season 2 finds Helen on a much happier (but no less rocky) path post-breakup. Helen still wants to pursue motherhood, and she’s willing to go through the journey on her own. Of course, it’s not as easy as she would hope.

If you’re making your way through Sweet Magnolias season 2 on Netflix, you might have been briefly confused by what exactly happens to Helen early on in the new season. Here’s everything you need to know about Helen’s journey in season 2.

Warning: Spoilers from Sweet Magnolias season 2 ahead!

Sweet Magnolias season 2 Helen’s pregnancy

In the beginning of the new season, Helen discovers that she’s pregnant. Although she’s no longer with Ryan, she’s elated at the news and the prospect of having her motherhood dreams come true so soon. Maddie and Dana Sue are right by her side to support her.

Unfortunately, while at Sullivan’s, Helen rushes to the bathroom, looking visibly ill. When she emerges from the bathroom, she nearly falls into Eriks arms and struggles to walk. Erik takes her to the hospital and we later learn that she lost the baby.

Once again, Maddie and Dana Sue are by Helen’s side every step of the way, as well as Erik, who steps up as a great friend first and a potential partner second. As she begins the healing process from the traumatic experience, Helen opens herself up to pursuing motherhood on her own and a new relationship with Erik.

Even though Helen’s dream of becoming a mother doesn’t come true this season, Ryan returns at the worst time to tell her he’s ready to start a family and even drops to one knee and proposes. Helen now has to decide if she wants to start a life with Erik or Ryan.
