When was Cheer season 2 filmed?

Cheer season 2 premiered on Netflix Wednesday, Jan. 12.

It’s been two years since we last saw the Navarro College cheerleaders and their head coach Monica Aldama. A lot has happened in that time, from the scandal involving Navarro cheerleader Jerry Harris to the pandemic that is still wreaking havoc in the United States and around the world.

The effect current events have had on the squad are apparent in the second season of Cheer as the cheerleaders prep for the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championship and new recruits vie for a place on the mat.

The timeline for Cheer season 2, however, may be confusing for some viewers as the newest installment of this docuseries actually covers two years instead of one like the first season. Here’s why the second season has an extended timeline.

Cheer season 2 timeline

According to Popsugar, filming on season 2 began in January 2020 in the same month that the previous season began streaming and gaining a following. However, due to COVID-19 and the cancellation of the 2020 NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championship, production stopped.

Filming didn’t resume until September 2020 during the new school year at Navarro College and Trinity Valley Community College, hence the fresh faces in the cast of the show. While there were COVID restrictions in place, filming was able to continue sporadically throughout the fall and winter.

When the Navarro and Trinity Valley cheerleaders arrive at the championships to defend their title, it’s April 2021. The next time jump brings the series into June of that year to catch up with a few cast members and get an update on what they’ve been up to since the end of the competition and the school year.
