In the mid-2010s, The CW really proved to us all what’s possible when you give niches shows some room to breathe. More often than not, shows with a distinctive sense of self can flounder without a support system behind it, but The CW stuck to its guns with the eccentric musical romantic comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. To this day, it’s one of the funniest shows on Netflix.

Rachel Bloom stars in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend as lawyer Rebecca Bunch, who in the first season runs into Josh Chan (Vincent Rodriguez III), her ex-boyfriend from summer camp, and follows him in his move to West Covina, California. As the series goes on and we get to know Rebecca and those around her better, musical numbers illuminate the ugly truth behind the most human emotions.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was one of the lowest-rated television shows on air during its run, but The CW didn’t give up on the Golden Globe-winning series. It’s a true testament to the kind of television Bloom created, an unflinching and one-of-a-kind piece of catchy catharsis. The very funny series has definitely left behind a lasting impact by inspiring other shows to introduce musical elements and carving a space for fellow musical dark comedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
