7 best thrillers on Netflix in 2021

We’ll be entering 2022 very soon, so it’s about time we share with you our list of the best movies to come out this year. More specifically, we’re going to give you our list of the seven best thrillers on Netflix in 2021.

2021 was a great year for Netflix, and we saw many new releases of different genres come out throughout the year. While some Netflix movies were considered flops, others quickly rose to the top of Netflix’s top 10 list in its first week and managed to stay for a good period of time.

Although 2021 might be coming to an end soon, we still have several new highly anticipated titles to land on the streamer in the next couple of weeks, such as The Witcher season 2, Emily in Paris season 2, Don’t Look Up, Cobra Kai season 4, Stay Close, and The Lost Daughter so be on the lookout!

But if you’re in the mood for a good thrill and want to watch a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat, take a look at our list of the seven best thrillers on Netflix down below.

The Guilty

The Guilty made its way to Netflix on Oct. 1 and was watched by 69 million households over its first month of release on the streamer. It mostly received positive reviews from critics, with much praise for Jake Gyllenhaal‘s performance as troubled police officer Joe Baylor.

The crime thriller is a remake of the 2018 Danish film titled the same name by Gustav Möller. The Guilty was written by Nic Pizzolatto and directed and produced by Antoine Fuqua. It follows demoted police officer Joe Baylor as he works the night shift at a 911 call center. When he receives a call from a distressed caller who has been abducted by a mystery person, he must find a way to locate the caller before it’s too late.

We don’t see many characters in the film other than Joe (Jake Gyllenhaal), Sergeant Denise Wade (Christina Vidal), and Manny (Adrian Martinez). However, this thriller movie has a voice cast of well-known actors like Riley Keough, Peter Sarsgaard, Eli Goree, Ethan Hawke, David Castañeda, Paul Dano, Gillian Zinser, and many other supporting actors.

Night Teeth

Shortly before Halloween 2021, a vampire thriller movie was released on Netflix on Oct. 20 called Night Teeth. While the film received mixed reviews from critics, the cast was praised for their performances. Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Debby Ryan, Lucy Fry, Raul Castillo, Alfie Allen, Alexander Ludwig, Sydney Sweeney, and Megan Fox star in this thriller film about vampires enjoying a night of party-hopping in Los Angeles.

It follows Benny, a young college student who one night asks his brother if he can drive in place of him as a chauffeur to earn some quick cash. However, Benny isn’t expecting to pick up two mysterious women who turn out to be bloodsucking vampires. He must drive them to their every destination while fighting to stay alive. Will Benny make it through the night in one piece?

We recommend you watch Night Teeth if you want to watch a movie that will put you on a thrill ride full of twists and turns. Not only is it one of the best thrillers on Netflix this year, but it’s also one of the best movies to watch and not skip. It’s worth watching with your friends on a lazy weekend.

Ride or Die

Not many people know about this Japanese thriller film, but I’m here to introduce you to one of the best thrillers on Netflix in 2021. Ride or Die is based on the manga series titled Gunjō by Ching Nakamura. Ryuichi Hiroki directed the film from a screenplay written by Nami Sakkawa.

It dropped on Netflix on April 15 and has a 67% tomatometer score and 62% audience score, according to Rotten Tomatoes. While it doesn’t necessarily have a high score, we still recommend checking out Ride or Die. I really enjoyed this film and wished there was a sequel in the works, but that doesn’t seem likely. So I’ll just have to revisit this incredible film every once in a while.

Ride or Die follows the complicated relationship between Rei and her longtime crush, Nanae. After Rei finds out that Nanae has been abused by her husband for years, Rei sets a plan in motion to get rid of Nanae’s husband by murdering him. This murder sends Rei and Nanae on the run for their lives. But will Nanae accept Rei’s love, and the two ride off into the sunset?

Army of Thieves

Army of Thieves comes from a screenplay written by Shay Hatten, based on a story he wrote with Zack Snyder. It’s a prequel to the zombie horror film Army of the Dead and focuses on bank teller Ludwig Dieter as a mysterious woman recruits him to help her crew of thieves in leading a top-secret heist all across Europe.

Many people thought Army of Thieves would include the same characters from Army of the Dead, but that wasn’t the case. Instead, the only character you’ll be familiar with from the first film is Ludwig Dieter played by Matthias Schweighöfer. In this prequel, we’re introduced to a new cast of actors such as Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Noemie Nakai, Jonathan Cohen, John Bubniak, and Peter Simonischek.

While this film received mixed reviews from critics, it had a consistent run on Netflix’s top 10 list. And guess what? There’s a prequel anime series coming soon called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and a direct sequel to Army of the Dead called Planet of the Dead.

Hypnotic

The next film on our list of the best thrillers on Netflix in 2021 is Hypnotic. Hypnotic was dropped on the streamer on Oct. 27, and viewers were excited to see this new thriller film about a depressed woman who enlists help from a mysterious hypnotherapist. However, the woman finds that she got more than she bargained for after a handful of sessions and is trapped in a deadly mind game.

Hypnotic was written by Richard D’Ovidio and directed by Matt Ange land Suzanne Coote. This thriller movie’s cast includes Kate Siegel, Jason O’Mara, Dulé Hill, Lucie Guest, Jaime M. Callica, Tanja Dixon-Warren, Luc Roderique, Devyn Dalton, Stephanie Cudmore, and Jessie Fraser.

While some people are on the fence on if this Netflix movie is good or not, we recommend you give this film a chance and see if you like it yourself.

Intrusion

When Intrusion was released on Netflix on Sept. 22, I initially didn’t know what to think of this psychological thriller film. It easily reminded me of many thriller movies I’ve seen in the past. However, this movie managed to set itself apart from other thriller movies with a similar plot in the end. It has several thrilling moments and outstanding performances from the leading actors Freida Pinto and Logan Marshall-Green.

Intrusion is about a married couple (Meera and Henry) who leave the city life of Boston in hopes of starting a new life in a small town in New Mexico. Unfortunately, as soon as they move into their new dream house designed by Henry himself, they’re involved in a deadly home invasion. After this home invasion, Meera is left feeling traumatized and searches for answers. But her search for answers puts her in danger. Will Meera’s search for the truth lead her to her questionable husband?

There’s Someone Inside Your House

The last film on our list of the best thrillers on Netflix in 2021 is There’s Someone Inside Your House. This Netflix movie might be the last movie on our list, but its position has nothing to do with its quality. There’s Someone Inside Your House is just as thrilling as the other films listed above.

It’s a film adaptation of the 2017 book titled the same name by Stephanie Perkins and was directed by Patrick Brice and written by Henry Gayden. The cast is composed of amazingly talented actors like Sydney Park, Théodore Pellerin, Asjha Cooper, Jesse LaTourette, Diego Josef, Dale Whibley, Burkely Duffield, Sarah Dugdale, Markian Tarasiuk, Emilija Baranac, and others.

When There’s Someone Inside Your House landed on Netflix on Oct. 6, many teens were elated to watch a new slasher film after the release of the Fear Street trilogy in July. This thriller follows Makani and her friends at Osbourne High School as they try to identify and stop a masked assailant from targeting students and exposing their darkest secrets.

It’s pretty gory and very suspenseful, which makes up a good thriller, if you ask me. We definitely suggest you watch this film if you haven’t already by the end of the year. So many new movies and shows are slated to come to the streamer in 2022, and we don’t want you to forget about this thriller.
