The Vampire Diaries is one of the most well known CW shows that’s still making an impact on the network even years after it finished airing. While the series wrapped in 2017, it spawned The Originals spin-off focused on Klaus and the Mikaelson family which in turn produced its own spin-off called Legacies, a series about Klaus’ daughter.

The reign of all things supernatural may not be felt as strongly on The CW since the channel is slowly canceling most of its content as it prepares to be sold off to Nexstar, but there’s no arguing against this vampire drama’s place in pop culture history or its influence on the network itself.

As such, it’s not surprising that fans have continued to rewatch The Vampire Diaries via Netflix and that the series keeps picking up new viewers through the streamer despite the near five years that it’s been off air. Unfortunately, however, the show’s time on the platform is drawing to a close. Here’s what we know about The Vampire Diaries’  impending departure from Netflix.

When is The Vampire Diaries leaving Netflix?

There has been some back and forth recently regarding the status of The Vampire Diaries on Netflix. The show was originally supposed to leave back in March, but it appears the deal with changed to allow Netflix to keep it a little longer. But now the site itself is reporting that the last day to watch the series will be on September 3, 2022.

If you look at the official Vampire Diaries page on Netflix it says so. It doesn’t say explicitly if all seasons will be removed at once or not, though, but we’re assuming that is the case. This news isn’t too surprising because Warner Bros. has slowly been pulling its bigger shows off of Netflix one by one.

While there’s been no word on whether or not The Vampire Diaries will be moving to a new streaming home, if it does it’s likely that platform will be HBO Max. The streamer is the home of CW shows that begun airing in 2019 after Warner Media and ViacomCBS’ licensing deal with Netflix ended.

However, it’s hard to say when or if that will happen yet because The Originals also left Netflix recently (sans the fifth and final season which is still on Netflix) and it has yet to move to HBO Max. Legacies is still streaming all four seasons on Netflix and should be there for a few more years thanks to the old CW/Netflix deal.

Where to watch The Vampire Diaries?

Updated on August 25, 2022: HBO Max has confirmed that all eight seasons of The Vampire Diaries will stream there the day after the show leaves Netflix, so you can start watching on HBO Max on September 4, 2022.

After the show leaves Netflix you will only be able to watch it if you pay for it from platforms like Amazon, Apple or Vudu. But it does seem likely that the show will eventually transition to HBO Max or the free, ad-supported CW Seed.

We’ll keep you posted on more The Vampire Diaries streaming news as it comes in. Stay tuned to Netflix Life, your go-to site for all things Netflix from your favorite original series to hit television shows on the streamer!

Given that Legacies is over, it looks like it really is time to say goodbye to The Vampire Diaries universe (for now).
