Nightmare of the Wolf is the first movie in Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s The Witcher franchise exclusively with Netflix! The film serves as a prequel to the stories in the Netflix original TV series, about Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir. This action-packed animated thriller was directed by Kwang Il Han.
You’ll need some basic context from The Witcher show in order to fully enjoy The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, as the lore in the series is vast. The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) as he struggles to survive in a harsh world as a monster hunter. The series also follows Yennefer, a witch who rose to power from tragedy, as she also tries to find her place in the world. Some ways away, young Princess Cirilla (Freya Allan) is on a mission to seek out Geralt after her kingdom is attacked and destroyed. This story about their intertwining destinies is a journey you can’t skip out on.
If you haven’t watched the show yet, now is the time! You can binge the 7 episodes of The Witcher and the movie before season 2 is released on Dec. 17, 2021.
Back to the movie: Nightmare of the Wolf takes place many years before the events depicted in the show, when Geralt’s mentor Vesemir is in his prime and witchers have a strong community. Vesemir is called to action when a new monster begins terrorizing the local kingdom. The film dives deeper into the world of The Witcher, including how witchers are made, what happened to them, and giving insight into the political struggles of the fantasy country.
Vesemir is played by Theo James, whose voice you might recall as Four from the Divergent franchise. His mentor, Deglan, you may recognize as Dwalin from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, Tetra as Irene Adler from BBC’s Sherlock, and Lady Zerbst as Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is rightfully rated TV-MA for violence, nudity, profanity, and intense scenes. This movie is for sure nasty when it comes to the violence and arguably more intense than the show due to the detailed animation.
If you can get past the superbly animated gore, Nightmare of the Wolf is a monster-laden movie that won’t scare you too bad.
