Will Shadow and Bone season 2 start filming in 2022?

Shadow and Bone season 2 has been on the forefront of fans’ minds since the the first season ended.

With the official announcement of the show’s renewal in June, the anticipation for when filming would begin and production would start rolling has been quite high. It even spiked when producer Shawn Levy said that the show was dangerously close to going back into production.

However, that was back in August. It’s been two months since that news broke and, until recently, there had been no word on whether or not filming was set to begin soon.

Given Jessie Mei Li and Ben Barnes’ separate Netflix projects (Havoc and Cabinet of Curiosities, respectively), along with Kit Young filming the soccer film The Beautiful Game, the delay in filming is understandable. But, with those projects winding down if not all but finished, the question of when filming on Shadow and Bone will begin still remains to be answered.

While promoting his new EP Songs for You, Barnes gave fans a time frame for when the cast and crew could be returning to set, but it’s one that could push back Shadow and Bone‘s anticipated release window.

When will Shadow and Bone season 2 start filming?

Update: Monday, Nov. 8 – What’s on Netflix reports that filming for Shadow and Bone season 2 will begin January 2022 in Budapest and run until July 2022.

Barnes was featured on the Open House Party podcast on September 29, 2021. During his interview with the host Kannon, Barnes made mention of filming beginning next year.

"I think they’re going to sort of shake it up a bit in terms of what happens in the stories a little bit. I’m hoping we go back beginning of next year and shoot. I’m excited to see where they take it actually because I was really proud of the first season."

While he was unable to confirm that filming would begin in 2022, this interview paired with his more recent one with Collider suggests that we’re still a ways off from production on Shadow and Bone starting up. Barnes told Collider the following about filming:

"We haven’t started and I don’t know exactly when we’re going to. I’m hopeful it will be soon because I’m waiting with as much anticipation as those fans who you were talking about because I’m one of them. I’m excited to see what they do with it, and I’m excited to see when we can get going."

He also hasn’t seen any of the scripts. While it’s possible the show could go into production in November or December, it’s looking more likely that that won’t be the case. If Shadow and Bone season 2 does start filming at the top of 2022, the likelihood of the show making a return in the same year isn’t high.

Shadow and Bone season 2 release date predictions

While we’re not ready to rule out a 2022 premiere for the sophomore season of this fan favorite Netflix original series, we’re also not ruling out a 2023 release date. The earliest we could see Shadow and Bone season 2 is late 2022 possibly as a December offering on the streamer. But at this point, fans should start preparing to wait until 2023.
