Chase Stokes cast opposite Joey King in Netflix YA sci-fi movie ‘Uglies’

Chase Stokes, the ever dashing and daring John B. on Outer Banks, is set to start in another Netflix original. This time he’ll be trading in his surf board and penchant for treasure hunting for a more sci-fi role, one where beauty standards are so high teens must have compulsory surgery to be considered pretty.

Uglies, which is based on the books by YA author Scott Westerfeld, will take viewers on a psychological thrill ride of a dystopian take on society’s issues with perfection. Produced by The Kissing Booth‘s Joey King, Jamie King, Westerfeld, and John Fox, the film is likely to be the first in a series.

Netflix has been the reigning king of teen content for some time now. Each year subscribers can be rest assured, whether its through movies or shows, the streamer will be providing fresh media for the 13-18 demographic. Often that’s through adapting classic and fan favorite young adult novels for the small screen.

2021’s biggest entry was Shadow and Bone which was renewed for a second season. While that series has taken the crown for fantasy series adapted from YA for the streamer, perhaps Uglies will soon be taking it’s own place as a big YA  sci-fi draw for Netflix. With King and Stokes attached to the film that’s likely to be a possibility considering the popularity of their respective Netflix originals.

According to Deadline, Stokes’ role in the film has yet to be revealed. The casting announcement came with news that Keith Powers (The Perfect Find) and Brianne Tju (I Know What You Did Last Summer) have also signed onto Uglies.

At this time in development, only King’s role has been speculated about. She’s likely to be slated to play the lead, Tally Youngblood. In the books, Tally creates quite the stir when she defies the conventions of her society and begins reject confirming to their ideals of beauty. This happens after her new found friends Shay and David show her that being “pretty” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
