Do Janine and Ashley get together in The Baby-Sitters Club season 2?

Janine Kishi isn’t at all like her sister Claudia. Quiet, matter-of-fact, and prone to didactic explanations, the oldest Kishi child stands out quite a bit from the rest of her family. She, however, is kind and more wise than Claudia gives her credit for. She also has more of a life than her kid sister has paid attention to which The Baby-Sitters Club season 2 makes abundantly clear.

To be fair, Janine is a side character as are the rest of the baby-sitters’ siblings. Often they appear for the girls to grouch at, soothe or be soothed by, or as a point of emotional contrast in an episode that deals with heavy subject matter. However, Janine is probably the sibling we see the most outside of Kristy’s step-sister, Karen Brewer.

As such we know that she spends much of her time alone, is analytical possibly to a fault, and is considered to be an annoyance to Claudia. They differ so much in personality and thought pattern that they clash. So much so Claudia has said more than one hurtful thing to her sister regarding her place in their family, particularly when it comes to their grandmother, Mimi.

Still, when Janine befriends Ashley Wyeth, the coolest girl at Stoneybrook High, it takes Claudia by surprise. She thought Ashley was only going to be around for the project the two were working on, but that’s not the case. In fact, it becomes clear later that there’s something a bit obvious that Claudia is missing.

Side characters don’t tend to have romances that are fleshed out in a series. It comes with the territory of their position in the story, but there’s still enough of a vibe between Janine and Ashley that it’s apparent their friendship isn’t only platonic.

Ashley is suddenly around all the time. She constantly has something positive to say about Janine and how fascinating and cool she finds her to be. The teen influencer could literally be anywhere, but she chooses to spend much of her time in Janine’s room.

Yes, those could be the hallmarks of friendship but given Janine’s lack of other friends and how little time we spend with her in the story, all of Ashley’s comments about her and the time she spends at the Kishi house point to a romance.

This becomes abundantly clear in “Claudia and the Sad Goodbye” when Janine is forced to tell Claudia that Ashley is her girlfriend so that her sister will stop snapping at her for wanting to give her a piece of jewelry that had been Mimi’s.

Their argument in that scene fizzled out quickly due to the heartbreak the both of them were feeling because of their grandmother’s recent passing and Claudia’s absence from their home in her grief. That one conversation, however, established not only that Janine and Ashley are together but also that she loves her and Mimi knew.

The girls had been in Mimi’s jewelry box because she had set aside a bracelet for Janine to give to Ashley in order to welcome her into their family. The bracelet in question had been the same one that their Gigi had give their grandmother decades ago when they’d first fallen in love.

It was a sweet gesture that spoke to Mimi’s love for Janine and her happiness in her granddaughter finding love. When Claudia invites her family and friends to tea in remembrance of Mimi, there’s a lingering shot of the bracelet on Ashley’s wrist which subtly showcases everyone now knows she and Janine are together.
