Riverdale season 6 premiered on The CW on Tuesday, Nov. 16, sliding the series into a new time slot that made Tuesdays a big night for the channel with The Flash season 8‘s “Armageddon” crossover event and Riverdale‘s “Rivervale” miniseries airing at the same time.

The season’s first five episodes were dedicated to the aftermath of Cheryl’s spellcasting which saw the town with pep go through a name change with its cast of characters stunningly unaffected by it until things got incredibly weird.

“Rivervale” had a high body count as well as guest appearances including the highly anticipated debut of Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman on Riverdale. While the Netflix original series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been linked to the CW show, it wasn’t until “The Witching Hour(s)” made its premiere that the two universes collided on network television.

Now that the five episode event is over, Riverdale season 6 has gone on hiatus. Here’s when the show returns to The CW in 2022 along with the Netflix release date for new season 6 episodes and what to expect next in the season.

Riverdale season 6 midseason premiere date

All five episodes of the “Rivervale” event are available to stream on The CW app and cwtv.com for a limited time. New Riverdale season 6 episodes will resume airing on Sunday, March 20 at 8 p.m. ET. That’s a night and time change for the show so mark your calendars accordingly.

Riverdale season 6 Netflix release updates

Per the streamer’s agreement with ViacomCBS and Warner Media, US Netflix subscribers can expect to see season 6 land on the platform eight days after the finale airs. That means we’ll be waiting until 2022 for the sixth season of the show to drop on Netflix US, most likely sometime in  and July.

Next day streaming on Netflix is available to subscribers who aren’t in the US. International versions of the streamer currently have five episodes of season 6. New episodes will begin dropping on the platform on Monday, March 21.

Riverdale season 6 cast

  • K.J. Apa as Archie Andrews
  • Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper
  • Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge
  • Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones
  • Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom
  • Casey Cott as Kevin Keller
  • Mädchen Amick as Alice Cooper
  • Vanessa Morgan as Toni Topaz
  • Charles Melton as Reggie Mantle
  • Drew Ray Tanner as Fangs Fogarty
  • Erinn Westbrook as Tabitha Tate

Marisol Nichols will be making a return to the series, reprising her role as Hermione Lodge. We last saw Hermione in season 5. She’d become a reality TV star and it looks like she’ll be bringing her cameras with her to the town with pep. Perhaps even against her daughter’s wishes.

Riverdale season 6 synopsis

The first five episodes of Riverdale season 6 are focused on “Rivervale.” The event is considered to be a miniseries within the show that can stand on its own but is a must-watch in order to understand some of the plot points and emotional motivations that occur later in the season.

“Rivervale” explains how Betty and Archie managed to escape Hiram’s last dastardly deed aka the bomb he left under Archie’s bed that went off in the season 5 finale. There’s also exploration of each of the romances the season left off on–Barchie, Veggie (Veronica/Reggie), Jabitha (Jughead/Tabitha), and Tangs (Toni/Fangs)–along with Cheryl’s witch heritage.

Without spoiling the events of “Rivervale,” we can tell you that the rest of the season will focus on yet another fight for the town’s soul. You‘s Chris O’Shea has been added to the cast in the role of Percival Pickens, a descendant of General Pickens who intends on turning Riverdale into a utopia.

Given his ancestry, we expect he’ll be causing all kinds of trouble in town potentially for Cheryl and Toni, though the casting announcement specifically pointed out an impending clash with Archie.
