American Horror Story is going to be one of the top picks for shows to watch for Halloween 2021. Is it actually scary to watch, though?

When it comes to watching content at Halloween, we want to be scared. This is the time for the things that go bump in the night. With a show like American Horror Story, you’d expect to be terrified from start to finish, right?

As of right now, you can watch eight seasons of the Ryan Murphy-created series on Netflix. However, there is a chance that three of the seasons will leave during the month of October. That’s the current plan, but we’ve seen this happen before and Netflix has managed to retain licensing rights.

The latest seasons of the series aren’t on Netflix, though. You’ll need to turn to FX on Hulu for the episodes. It doesn’t really matter though if the episodes aren’t scary, though, right?

Is American Horror Story actually scary?

I think whether something is scary or not is subjective. Put anything with a clown in, even when it’s not supposed to be a horror series, and I’m scared. That’s all a TV show needs to do.

Have a serial killer on the loose? I’m probably not going to be that scared. Personally, I don’t find American Horror Story all that scary, but I no longer find a lot of horror movies and shows scary. Podcasts and books on the other hand are completely different because my mind gets to run away with me as I picture it all.

That being said, there are some seasons of American Horror Story that are scarier than others. Cult, for example, has the clowns so it stands out, but there’s also the real-life horror of the season. Humans are so much worse than monsters and creatures—just ask the Winchester brothers on Supernatural.

The earlier seasons of American Horror Story stand out as the scariest of the lot. Season 10, Double Feature, has helped to bring the storylines back to darkness and scares.

It’s all based on what you find scary. There’s likely a season that stands out for you in terms of sticking with you on a dark night.

American Horror Story seasons 1 to 8 are currently available to stream on Netflix.
