Will Sex Education season 4 be the final season?
By Bryce Olin
You’ve watched Sex Education season 3, and now, you need to know what’s going on with Sex Education season 4. We get it, and we’re right there with you!
Netflix has not ordered Sex Education season 4 yet. Not publicly, anyway. We have a feeling the renewal is coming at TUDUM on Saturday, Sept. 25. Make sure you tune in for the fan event!
Sex Education is one of the big Netflix shows featured, and usually, Netflix shares big news at these things, so get ready for something good about Sex Education.
But, could it be bittersweet news?
Is Sex Education season 4 the last season?
Could Netflix announce Sex Education is renewed for season 4 AND that it’s the final season?
Let’s start with the first part. Sex Education season 4 has to happen with the way Sex Education season 3 ending. There’s no way this is the end for the Netflix original series. It can’t end this way.
Netflix is definitely going to renew Sex Education for season 4. That’s basically a sure thing at this point.
So, will it be the final season?
It kind of feels like it, doesn’t it? Netflix almost always wraps up teen shows in four seasons (or less). Look at 13 Reasons Why, On My Block, and more. Sex Education is better than those shows, but it’s still a high school show, and there appears to be some history of high school shows ending after four years, for obvious reasons.
More importantly, Sex Education feels like it’s reaching the end of this story. The school is closing, Maeve is moving to America, and the kids all have to split up to find a new school.
I’m thinking the next season could be that farewell season for all these characters. I hate typing that, but it just seems like that’s the next logical step in this story.
On top of that, this cast is getting older. As Emma Mackey, who plays Maeve, said in a recent interview with Hunger, they can’t play teens forever.
Here’s Mackey’s full quote, via Hunger:
"“It’s a complicated thing to me. Sex Education is so momentous as a concept, as a show, and the cast are phenomenal. I genuinely care about them all a lot and I made lifelong friends. We’ve kind of grown up together,” she says. “But the bittersweet nature of it is that I also can’t be 17 my whole life.”"
All the signs are pointing to Sex Education ending sooner rather than later. Now, we just have to wait and see what Netflix does, if season 4 is the final season, or if they could move on with new characters like Elite as things cast members get older.
