Did Emily in Paris win an Emmy in 2021?
By Reed Gaudens
It’s TV’s biggest night, and the Netflix original series Emily in Paris has a seat at the table. After landing a pair of Golden Globe nominations that shocked naysayers, the romantic comedy starring Lily Collins nabbed a coveted Emmy nod for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Emily in Paris dukes it out in a jam-packed category of critically acclaimed series such as Black-ish, Cobra Kai, Hacks, Pen15, Ted Lasso, The Flight Attendant and The Kominsky Method. Including the rom-com, Netflix accounts for half of the eight nominees.
While Emily in Paris goes into Emmy Sunday as perhaps the biggest underdog in the comedy category against projected winner Ted Lasso, we all know anything can happen when it comes to award shows. Sometimes the most unlikeliest show proves a dark horse and takes home an unexpected win.
Did Emily in Paris manage to beat out the Apple TV+ fan-favorite for the win, or did the Jason Sudeikis breakout sensation follow-up its Golden Globe with Emmy gold? Did another Netflix series win Outstanding Comedy altogether? Here’s what happened with Emily.
Is Emily in Paris an Emmy winner?
Unfortunately, Emily in Paris didn’t take home the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Instead, Ted Lasso won the big prize, succeeding last year’s winner Schitt’s Creek. It’s a credit to the series’ charm that it scored a place within this crowded race at all.
Since the Lily Collins-led series was an unexpected nominee in the first place, the series would have had an uphill battle to snag a win from buzzy comedies like Ted Lasso and Hacks. Those shows earned far more positive buzz from critics and audiences.
The series didn’t win its nomination for Outstanding Production Design For a Narrative Program (Half-Hour) at the Creative Arts Emmys, losing out to WandaVision. Disney+’s Marvel series was one of the biggest shows of the year, and a front-runner in most categories.
But it’s not all bad news for fans of the delightful rom-com. Emily in Paris season 2 will be coming soon to Netflix as filming had already wrapped on the follow-up season. The official release date could be announced at TUDUM, but we’re anticipating a late 2021 or early 2022 drop.
Whether or not Emily in Paris ever takes home an Emmy Award doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s one of the best guilty pleasure binges on Netflix, and it’s pretty cool to see a show like this recognized by an award ceremony as prestigious as the Emmys. There’s always next season!
