The comedy world lost one of the greats this week. Norm Macdonald was known for his sharp wit and stellar comedic timing. The comedian lost his private battle with cancer at the much too young age of 61.

Macdonald was an SNL cast member from 1993-1998 and was known for his portrayal of a gum-chomping Burt Reynolds, complete with a sly smile and bolo tie, always bantering with Will Ferrell‘s Alex Trebek. His most incredible SNL legacy was as the droll anchor for Weekend Update. A comedian of few words, he never used more words than necessary to get to the point of his joke. He was quoted as saying, “A joke should catch someone by surprise; it should never pander.”

In 2016 he penned a book, Based On A True Story: Not A Memoir, a New York Times bestseller, where he reflected on his love for stand-up and how fortunate he felt to have a career he loved.

He was known for his many stand-up specials, movie and series roles, including these seven that are available to watch on Netflix.
