Green Lantern 2 release date updates: Will there be a new sequel?
The Green Lantern film has touched down on Netflix, and its appearance in the streamer’s top 10 charts may have sparked curiosity as to the potential of a sequel rising from the ashes with Ryan Reynolds back behind the CGI mask.
The 2011 live-action movie Green Lantern had a lot of things going for it when it was first announced it was going to happen. Martin Campbell, director of GoldenEye and Casino Royale, was set to helm the picture with Ryan Reynolds portraying the titular character.
Sadly, an A-list cast consisting of Reynolds, his wife Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Michael Clarke Duncan, Tim Robbins, Angela Bassett and Peter Sarsgaard couldn’t help the god-awful pacing and storyline. As a result, the movie received negative reviews, and many people do not positively revere the DC motion picture.
Despite all of this, it would seem that there is renewed interest in getting the Green Lantern back in action. A tease of the character as shown in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but beyond that, the Lanterns are nowhere to be found in the DCEU as of writing this post, and many would agree that needs to change.
How many Green Lantern films are there?
So far, there is one live-action Green Lantern flick. It was released in theaters on June 17, 2011 and had a runtime of 114 minutes. The movie is currently available to stream on Netflix.
There are animated Green Lantern films like Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and Green Lantern: First Flight that fans should absolutely check out.
Is there going to be a sequel to Green Lantern?
The director Campbell had once alluded to a trilogy of Green Lantern films being on the table, and the film itself was supposed to launch the DC Cinematic Universe. There was even a post-credit scene showcasing Sinestro joining the evil Yellow Lantern Corp, setting him up to be the villain in the next endeavor.
But it would seem none of that would come to fruition. Instead, the flawed superhero motion picture completely bombed at the box office and received negative reviews, so Warner Brothers nixed any plans for a sequel.
An exciting new reboot is in the works focusing on Hal Jordan and John Stewart that will be the Green Lantern’s first official foray into the DCEU. There is also a TV series at HBO Max in the works called Green Lantern Corps, which will revolve around Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott.
The closest thing fans got to seeing Reynolds as the DC hero again was a scrapped idea for his character to meet up with Batman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. So, it would seem this Green Lantern will not be making a comeback any time soon.
How long is Green Lantern 2?
An official runtime has not been released for Green Lantern 2, and until a sequel is announced, which seems quite unlikely at this time, the length of the potential endeavor will remain a mystery.
As previously mentioned, the first run was 114 minutes long, so there is a good chance the next chapter would have a similar length. However, that time frame is pretty common amongst films these days. Most superhero movies go over the 2-hour mark, so there is that to consider when speculating on the matter.
When is Green Lantern 2 filming?
A timetable for production has not been unveiled for Green Lantern 2 because it will probably never happen. However, if it does happen, it will be interesting to see how long it takes to get made and actually come out.
Is Green Lantern 2 coming on Netflix?
Netflix has done its fair share of playing superhero to popular titles that have been canceled. Lucifer, Designated Survivor and Manifest have all been resurrected, and it’s not wild for some subscribers to dream of scenarios where Green Lantern gets a sequel order at the streaming powerhouse.
The chances of that happening are virtually non-existent as everything DC is most assuredly going to find its main hub on HBO Max. From Wonder Woman 1984 to Titans, everything that bears the logo of Marvel’s biggest rival is most assuredly end up within their ranks, so if Green Lantern 2 does ever happen, it will probably be on that streamer and not Netflix.
