There’s no time for mercy in Netflix’s newest thrilling action release Kate. Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as the main character, an assassin with one last deadly mission to carry out.

David Leitch — director of Atomic Blonde and producer for John Wick — adds another stoic badass with a license to kill to his repertoire in Kate.

This action thriller takes place in the underground crime world of Tokyo. Kate gives off the vibes of a tunnel-vision revenge thriller where you know the ending but are still along for the ride!

Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Kate alongside Woody Harrelson, Miku Martineau and Jun Kunimura.

What is the movie Kate about?

In the film, experienced assassin Kate realizes she’s been poisoned after botching a job. When she wakes up in the hospital, the doctor says she only has 15 hours to live with the poison in her system.

Kate steels herself in the face of death and vows to get vengeance on her killer before her own demise. She finds out that the biggest yakuza family in Japan is connected to the hit on her life, and gets information from a teenage girl named Ani. Kate forms an unlikely bond with Ani while on the last mission of her life.

Here’s how the official Netflix YouTube channel describes Kate:

"After she’s poisoned, a ruthless criminal operative has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies and in the process forms an unexpected bond with the daughter of one of her past victims."

The trailer features some funny bits alongside jaw-dropping action stunts. Kate as a character is definitely similar to one of Winstead’s previous roles: Huntress from Birds of Prey (2020). The stoic assassin character bent on revenge seems to be a role Winstead gravitates toward. Hopefully, Kate is different enough from Huntress that it doesn’t feel like deja vu.

We know how this one will end: either Kate gets revenge or fails and still dies. Maybe she can find a way to make it out alive, but we’ll only know once the movie premieres on Friday, Sept. 10, streaming only on Netflix.
