What is Afterlife of the Party about?

Afterlife of the Party is Netflix’s latest original movie starring Nickelodeon alum Victoria Justice. The film is labeled as a supernatural comedy and is directed by Stephen Herek and written by Carrie Freedle. Robyn Snyder and Deborah Evans serve as producers on the film according to IMDb.

Afterlife of the Party follows the story of Cassie (Victoria Justice), a young 20-something who chooses to party away most of her problems in life. On her 25th birthday, she decides to go all out by throwing a multi-day birthday party. Later, she finds herself incapacitated in a bathroom during the event and succumbs to a head injury after falling to the ground.

However, the universe isn’t quite done with Cassie just yet. In the afterlife, Cassie learns that she still has unfinished business on Earth and her guardian angel, Val (Robyn Scott), graciously gives her five days to make amends. If Cassie succeeds then she has a shot of getting into Heaven, otherwise, her soul will be condemned to Hell.

Cassie sets off to mend the relationships she broke during her life as an angel-in-training. Her first stop on this journey is reconnecting with her best friend, Lisa (Midori Francis), who is the only person Cassie can communicate with from beyond the grave. Together, they set forth to mend Cassie’s relationship with her grieving father and estranged mother. Along the way, they work to fix issues in their own friendship and hopefully find closure with one another.

The themes presented in Afterlife of the Party center around reflection and forgiveness. In Cassie’s case, she learns to look at her life from an outside perspective and see how her actions affect those closest to her. The film also touches on what genuine forgiveness looks like from both sides — the forgiver and the one asking for forgiveness.

While the film touches on some heartbreaking content, After Life of the Party also focuses on finding the positives in life even in the worst situations. The movie mixes serious material with bubbly aesthetics and light-hearted moments from impromptu dance parties to Cassie’s fabulous wardrobe makeovers.
