This Friday, a classic horror movie will experience a spiritual sequel. The film Candyman from 1992 will receive a trip down memory lane with Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele’s new perspective in Candyman (2021). The new version will release in theaters on Aug. 27, 2021.

The original Candyman is based on a short story by Clive Barker, The Forbidden. Barker’s story focused on the British class system where the director and writer of the film, Bernard Rose, chose race and social class of the US inner city.

Legend has it that the Candyman was the son of a slave who became an artist who would paint portraits of wealthy whites. He fell in love with one of the white daughters, and they had a child. A lynch mob was sent after him. They chopped off his hand and smeared it with honeycomb, attracting bees who stung him to death. His remains were burned in a pyre, and his ashes scattered on the ground where the Cabrini-Green apartments are built, the same apartments he is said to haunt.

Candyman is a spirit who can be summoned when his name is spoken five times while looking into a mirror. He will then kill the summoner with the hook that has replaced his severed hand.

Is Candyman on Netflix?

Sadly, no, Netflix doesn’t currently have Candyman (1992) available to stream. Perhaps in October, the streamer will be able to treat us with Candyman for the spooky viewing season.

The original had a great cast Virginia Madsen, Tony Todd, Xander Berkeley, Kasi Lemmons, Vanessa Estelle Williams, Gilbert, Lewis, and Ted Raimi.

Netflix may not have Candyman, but if you are looking for a good slasher film, check out the Netflix original films, Fear Street trilogy, The Babysitter and The Babysitter: Killer Queen.

Where to watch the original Candyman
