Are the Lord of the Rings movies on Netflix?

One of the best film franchises of all time is hands-down The Lord of the Rings trilogy. From billions of dollars at the box office to Academy Award sweeps, few film sagas could top the fantasy epic. Shockingly, not even The Twilight Saga could do it.

Ahead of the upcoming release of The Lord of the Rings series on Amazon, diehard fans of the series are more than likely searching for where they can catch up on the original film trilogy released in the 2000s.

Naturally, your first stop might be Netflix, where The Lord of the Rings movies have streamed in the past in various combinations. However, you might want to keep looking elsewhere for the fan-favorite trilogy to catch up before next year’s Amazon series premieres.

Unfortunately, The Lord of the Rings movies aren’t currently available to watch on Netflix, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t return in the future or that they aren’t available on any other streaming service. Here’s where to watch the award-winning trilogy.

Where to watch the Lord of the Rings movies

Right now, you can find all three Lord of the Rings movies on HBO Max. That’s right, you can watch have yourself a marathon of the fantasy-adventure series with the whole trilogy: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003).

For those also looking for the complete saga, HBO Max also houses all three movies in The Hobbit prequel trilogy starring Martin Freeman: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014).

While it may be a bit confusing for both film trilogies to be on HBO Max while fans anticipate the Amazon Prime Video series, which has a set premiere date for September 2022, the eight-episode first season takes place before both trilogies in the Second Age of Middle-earth.
