Best Netflix shows and movies: Black Summer

The Netflix original series Black Summer gives The Walking Dead a run for its money. This series focuses more on survival in an apocalypse than the relationships of the survivors. This concept appeals to a different demographic and has more of a horror vibe.

Black Summer tales place only six weeks after the outbreak and is set within the same universe as Z Nation, which makes sense as The Asylum produces both series

Rose, a mother separated from her daughter during an evacuation, sets out to find her in a world full of the undead. This is soon after the outbreak, so it is a perilous time to be out wandering. She encounters many people along the way, good ones and bad ones, in her search for her daughter.

This series is gory and feels more serious than some zombie-themed choices. Stephen King has even added his approval of the series with a Tweet stating, “Just when you think there’s no more scare left in zombies, THIS comes along.” The second season has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix currently has two seasons of Black Summer available.

Best Netflix shows and movies: Cargo

This Australian apocalyptic horror stars Martin Freeman. Cargo is a story about a man and his family, who have taken resident on a houseboat in Australia to keep away from the virus that turns humans rabid. They are making their way to a location that is set up as a refuge.

This film sets up the evils of this new world immediately. In addition to the virus that gives you 48 hours until you turn, other humans trying to survive pose a threat and the scarcity of food and water is always forefront in the minds of those trying to live another day. Cargo really gives heavy thought to the question, what would you do if you had two days to live?

Andy’s story takes some terrible turns and requires much of him to carry out his mission. Events force him to make landfall, and that is when the story really takes off. He meets a friend along the way who comes alongside to aid him.

Freeman does an amazing job in this film that pushes the zombie genre in a different direction.
